Seems you could be right....Would explain the red tail & the unusual head-shape.

Used to see them all the time down here in Vic/Bass Straight diving for crays. Its a type of weed eating Morwong...We rarely (if ever) caught them when fishing although they were there in pretty big numbers. Fish sometimes can change color when caught.
