Catching a cold/flu/hayfever thing on my first day off in a while and just in time for the weekend when I had planned a lot of things to do.

Plus side I've been in bed for nearly two days watching Harry Potter.

We all know what'd happen to any President who takes the plunge, though.

Also their party would never get any votes in the South ever again. Not that this latest massacre even happened in the South.

i suppose the US presidents are on set terms anyway, it wouldnt be a selfless act at the end of your term to take one for the team and make the changes? you are going out anyway, why not leave a lasting legacy!

They need to introduce gun reforms in baby steps. Something like
  1. Introduce far tighter checks on those who can own a firearm licence
  2. Ban fully automatic weapons outright save for the military and law enforcement
  3. Limit semi automatic weapons to those that need them in a professional capacity
  4. Assess from there. Other options would be things like banning possession of a firearm in a public place
It would need to be drip fed over a number of years. A big bang approach simply won't work in the US, and as Doss points out, it'd be political suicide for anyone who attempted to do so.

Some states have introduced local laws making the license checks tighter already and apparently it's brought down the levels of gun related violence. It's something the federal government could piggy back on.

If there continues to be several massacres per year, it'll reach tipping point at some time.

Would never go any further than that though and in all honesty they'd be pushing shit uphill trying to even get that up on a national scale.

You'd like to think so but all the available evidence points to the contrary. They've been having several massacres a year for years now. They just don't seem to get it.

Plus the murder rate in most places has actually declined markedly and that doesn't help the argument, perversely enough.

For example, there were 2245 murders in New York City in 1990, compared to 328 in 2014.

NRA will cite that and say "where's the problem?"

We're at least hearing it discussed at higher levels and in more detail now than has ever been done in the past. Will it ever happen? Who knows, but at least it is being discussed.
