And following on from that, "keep the death penalty!"
I won't go there and I know we've debated it before. I think there are circumstances where the death penalty is a just punishment, however I know you're firmly opposed and can respect that.

if only they knew terror reigned within their own borders..

The terroists.. terroists.. terror.. terror ..terror. On reapeat on every news report, culture of fear, fight the terroists, terror, ...Terroists, They dont all wear scarves and burkas...

all they need carry is a gun.

Wheres the army of the willing now?

It must be too hard to look in the mirror, to see the thing you are fighting is the thing you are.

I'm not even debating the issue itself there so much, more pointing out the fact their attitude is to be purely punitive- rather than addressing the root cause of the problem.

i suppose the US presidents are on set terms anyway, it wouldnt be a selfless act at the end of your term to take one for the team and make the changes? you are going out anyway, why not leave a lasting legacy!
It'd never get past Congress or the Senate - both are controlled by Republicans.

Would never go any further than that though and in all honesty they'd be pushing shit uphill trying to even get that up on a national scale.

You'd like to think so but all the available evidence points to the contrary. They've been having several massacres a year for years now. They just don't seem to get it.
It was a tough battles for the Democrats to ban Grenade Launchers form being available to the public. Grenade Launchers. And then George Bush made them legal again in 2004. Insanity.

Plus the murder rate in most places has actually declined markedly and that doesn't help the argument, perversely enough.

For example, there were 2245 murders in New York City in 1990, compared to 328 in 2014.

NRA will cite that and say "where's the problem?"
I think it was the guys that wrote Freakonomics that proved that the drop in murders (and crime in general) was due largely to abortion being legalised.

I've read that book and seen the doco. Because abortion was legalised there were actually less kids being born into dire social circumstances which in turn lead to less desperate criminals. Is that how the theory went? Didn't they also prove that how well you do in life can be based on the name you're given or something? And there was something about climate change and the amount of horseshit around pre industrial revolution..
