What size should the AFL be?

It's funny how triggered how cats fans are. You guys are like a cross between Gerard Whateley and Chris Scott. It's pretty awesome how sensitive you guys are.

It's like that don't realise that any contraction of the league, the teams with smaller support bases and marginal finances would be the first looked at.

Fourteen teams. Too many average plodders and state league spuds stinking up AFL lists currently.
The AFL is supposed to be the ELITE competition for Australian footballers and the standards currently on offer are simply not up to par.
Also, with the severe downgrading of the various state leagues across the country, country football struggling and junior numbers nowhere near as strong as they were because of various factors including mismanagement by the AFL, the numbers of talented footballers coming through the system is not there like it once was.
Forget about having a Tasmanian team, the sport at grass roots level in Tasmania is almost completely dead, also through various forms of gross mismanagement as well demographic changes.

Oh really? You seriously can't be saying the current standard is as good as it was fifteen years ago.
You can't seriously be saying the state leagues are doing as well as they were.
You can't seriously be saying generally that the numbers of juniors playing is as strong it was.
You can't seriously be saying Tasmanian football isn't almost dead?
I've heard it all now...
Only improvement in football in recent times is the number of women participants.

By a mile

You can't seriously be saying the state leagues are doing as well as they were.

Nope, state leagues are struggling a bit

You can't seriously be saying generally that the numbers of juniors playing is as strong it was.

Easily. The young players over the last few years are the best developed and talented in memory

You can't seriously be saying Tasmanian football isn't almost dead?

Are you seriously saying it is? What an unhinged, hysterical assertion

AS you can see Geelong received the lowest total distribution from the AFL in 2018 (13.1 million)
Richmond raked in 15 million, Sydney Swans 14.5 mill, and Gold Coast 23.4 million.

Your older brother is not as attached to the purse strings!

Wow, a flag only 3 years ago and the Bulldogs are still feeding off the AFL higher than North. That's a club that can't afford to bottom out.

"Despite winning the premiership in 2016, the Bulldogs haven’t really seen a big jump in their “size”, because they’re still bound by the limitations of a modest supporter base.

in the 2018 reporting year which began 12 months after the premiership, the Bulldogs’ tickets and memberships were around St Kilda and North’s level. They had roughly the same sponsorship income as GWS."

Not sure how to increase supporter base- attempt to tie yourself to population increases, aka 'Western' Bulldogs.
Make yourself the club that new arrivals support?

Geelong have a low distribution but "other payments" include things like AFL memberships which I'm guessing you'd have a lot more of if the AFL insisted when contributing to the redevelopment and getting governments over the line that they get the entire reg hickley stand for exclusive access to AFL members. I would say both you base distribution would go up and you "other payments"

Anyway, it is all moot, anyone putting Geelong forward as a candidate for exclusion from a contracting league is clearly trolling

That's the angle North is trying. Not really any luck so far.

It's a valid strategy, but a difficult challenge to engage newly arrived groups in the national game.
The migrant groups of the seventies- what clubs did they end up supporting in Melbourne?

Did say people of Greek and Italian backgrounds choose one club in particular? Why?

The crowd at Giants matches is interesting- lots of children from 'non traditional' football backgrounds, at least anecdotally.

It all starts with Auskick/ Rooskick?

The thing about the Mediterranean / Balkan migrants of the 50s to 70s is they disproportionately moved in to inner city working class suburbs (or adjacent) with VFL clubs in them.

Obviously it is a tougher challenge today for the likes of North and the Bulldogs to get immigrant kids in altona to support them....to the extent they are attracted to the game they are more likely to go for the big winning team with the big crowds that's always on the telly

2 points.

Firstly, that doesn't factor in the money they put into your stadium.

Secondly, I was referring to your club finances. For a club that has been 'up' for decades, you're not exactly rolling in money (indeed, the only reason you've got positive net assets if the 'gifts' from the government and AFL for your ground. Go through an extended bad patch and you'll rapidly be in North Melbourne territory.

Third, you don't ut into the league nearly as much as other Vic clubs, therefore you don't get money back. (Docklands games, AFL members). That affects the numbers significantly.

Oh, and Richmond's money included the prize money for winning the GF.

Now each year Every player is put into a pool and we take X amount of how many players available and make up some names, Put them into a hat, Players now draw and legally have to change their name to that via Deed Poll. We take the Economic sucess of each town and whoever has Most economic sucess in $ figure divided by how many people have been caught jerking it in the local carpark at woolies, will determine the figure, Whoevver comes out on first gets to pick who gets the first player (Drafting alphabetically, so if Dustin Martin has to change his name via deed poll to Aaron Aamir he's going to Adelaide (While economically s**t, the locals tend to jerk off at foodland over woolies so the figure they get is going to naturally be high, Opposed to Geraldton where a good time is either meth of having a raunchy session in the woolies carpark)

Winners of each round are given a box to call out their next opponent (kind of like UFC\WWE style), and assuming they get to the agreed upon weight (team will be put on a scale and need to make the agreed upon cut (1,848, making guys like Westhoff invaluable) they will duel for the AFL championship belt. You cannot play in a Grand final unless you are within 10th seed of the top team. As long as Gil doesnt dare add in Supergoals and make the whole thing stupid

Now this actually makes sense.
Just having the amount of decent size stadiums would be an issue.
Cheers,
I base this idea on all teams should play everyone twice to achieve a fair competition.
As for how tier 2 would look I admit it needs work and thought.
Alas I see the AFL going the other way and expanding the teams.
So then all teams should play everyone once we could even do that now.But then the draw would play apart re home and away games.
And what club gets a good home draw.
