The first four stats I look at are disposal efficiency, contested possessions, tackles and 1%ers. I find you get an idea of work rate and effectiveness through those four. Contested possessions I treat with a little suspiscion as there is some debate about how involved in an actual contest you have to be to get the stat. The big hole in working out someone’s game from stats is the intangible one that you can only really pick up at the game (rarely on TV), and that’s decision making and option taking. Player x might have 5 options and dispose efficiently to the least appealing or productive one. Leads made (honoured and not) would be another. You can’t beat being at the ground to get a handle on those ones.
Having pushed his barrow all year, I was delighted to see that Jordan Roughead led all comers in the 1%ers stat as it bore out what I was seeing at games throughout the season. A lot of work off the ball for his team mates. Kudos to him.

Just a question; what exactly is a 1%er? I've heard a few different explanations from different people. :p

The score. The only stat that matters.
This. Doesn't matter if you have more in the clearances or 1 percenters column.

The team that wins is the team with the higher goal count most of the time.

That would probably put you at odds with McCartney (this year anyway) as he suggested some time earlier that results were not the most important thing. Accepting that there is nothing wrong with being at odds with the coach, he was probably more concerned with developing players and structures and would be looking for some indicators to track progress/development.
Total/contested football. To me that is applying and withstanding pressure for extended periods. There is scoreboard pressure but if I were looking to assess a player’s capacity to implement this style/structure there are a couple of stats I’d look at for indications.
I am a fan of the way Sydney play and it’s their unyielding willingness to apply pressure that I most like. The opposition are almost always under pressure when they are disposing and receiving, increasing the likelihood of turnovers or at least the opportunity. Conversely, when Sydney are in possession, they shepherd and block to relieve pressure on their own disposal increasing the likelihood of its effectiveness. They lead the league in tackles, 1%ers and contested possessions. Hawthorn lead in disposal efficiency.(averages per game)
Ultimately, a better score and more goals is the objective. At the moment, I’m interested in trying to assess what players will help us get there. Pressure indicators would be my starting point.

It depends on the player.

For midfielders, I like to see clearances, tackles and inside 50s. For guys with fewer contested possessions, the clanger count needs to be low. I'm more lenient on the clanger count when they racking up large numbers of contested possessions (it still counts against them though)

Interloper has it in a nutshell. For this season at least . Looking at the premiership team it seems like Macca has the premiership prototype down, just needs to deliver it.
He just needs to get the right players in the right positions, and he seems to know what he wants where. Time will tell!

2013 will be the Year of the Tackle.
That's just about the only meaningful stat that the Swans won (apart from the scoreboard of course) yet they won the flag.
Agree that tackles will be highly valued Dogwatch, but I also note that no team of players play for each other like Sydney do. I think that this is a big part of some of the rhetoric from BMac this year: total team footy; being good team mates; winning the game contest by contest; everyone playing defense.

The stat's that really matter to me would be....

- Clanger kicks/handballs
- Missed Tackles/Tackles Not Held
- Clearances (broken into Centre, Boundary and Field, and determined on a Win/Loss/Neutral basis)
- Scores from Inside 50's (the best form of pressure is ALWAYS scoreboard pressure, not tackling pressure)
