Tertiary and Continuing What subject are you studying at Uni?

I thought this is pretty much the essential thread on any University board.

I'm into my 3rd year at the University of Tasmania studying Business majoring in Accounting and Corporate Governance. I'm working full-time and studying part-time so I've still got a fair bit left to go unfortunately. A bit over half the way there I think.

What is everyone else studying? Where is everyone else studying?

Have the option of doing Bachelor of Commerce (accounting) next year as I deferred this year.

What are your thoughts on this subject? I am interested in doing it just wondering what the work is like?, have heard it is confusing the first year then start to makes sense?

I had previously completed accounting in college (twice :p) and had done business studies in high school, plus both my parents are "TAFE" accountants. Having said that, I DID find it confusing in first year because they used this worksheet system rather than using T-accounts and debits & credits like I'd been taught previously.

It was the biggest step backwards but the next accounting subject I did reverted back to what I had already been taught.

Have you completed any accounting subjects at school? Once you get your head around it, the subject isn't that bad. It's a challenge but once you build on those basics, I find it gets better!

As for workload, mate you'll find all uni can be a slog. I've a friend who's doing arts and she had 4 assignments due in the space of one week! I'd seriously recommend finding a job and working there whilst studying part-time as I've done. Whilst it takes longer to get to that qualification, you've that much practical experience that many graduates don't have; automatically making you more hireable! You can't teach experience!

Accounting is very boring mate. It is not that difficult and job prospects are good but do you really want to be shuffling digits for the next 40 years?

Pretty funny your perceptions are based on nothing really mate. Shuffling digits isn't the only thing accountants do ;)

What is it that you're doing? I can guarantee there's just as many negatives as working as an accountant.

FWIW, if you come out of uni with an accounting degree, you don't necessarily ended up punching numbers. Whilst I'm currently working at an accounting firm, doing audit, taxation & accounting, I'm actually more interested in the business coaching and consulting side of things.

Accounting being boring is a myth now imo. As BCF said, it is a lot more than working with numbers.
I've just finished my Bachelor of Commerce and I always wanted to do a CPA or CA course when I finished. I'm looking at getting into Finance as a career but I'd want to spend at least the next 3 years getting a good understanding of accounting because it is a very useful skill to have in the business world.

3rd and final year Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition @ Deakin, Burwood.

There's kind of too many options and I still have no real idea of where this is going to take me

If I want to do Post Grad in Public Health Nutrition I'll have to wait til mid 2011, so I'll probably just look for a food industry job, most likely in food safety because that's really where the openings are.

I've got a degree in Accounting, and have had for 20 years. I'm aware what it entails.

I'm studying for a degree in philosophy at the moment at Macquarie. Hoping to get good enough marks to do masters at Melbourne

Considering doing it Part time but since I deferred the year I am just eager to get uni over and done with and get into a full time job. Course I have been offered is 3years full time, does that mean doing it part time it would take 6 years?

Thanks for your input fellow members, seems like a few study accounting on here.

Potentially. I've done some summer school units so that's speeding up my degree. Though unfortunately, failing subjects will set that back. Lets hope that doesn't happen to you!

Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, 1st year. I was tossing up between Engineering and a Bachelor of Space Science and Astrophysics but thought both the job prospects and pay would be better in Engineering. I also considered philosophy but like the space science degree I didn't know where you could possibly end up, other than centrelink.

Does anyone have any experience in either of these two fields or know what sort of oppurtunities there are available from them?

I am in my 6th year :)eek:) at Melbourne Uni and doing honours in anthropology after completing an Arts/Science duel degree last year.

You did a degree in Arts/Science fighting? :p

Finished a Bachelor of Science with majors in Ecology and Environmental Science last year.

Didn't feel comfortable entering the jobs market with that qualification so am now doing a Masters in Accounting at Melbourne.

I'm keen on doing an engineering course next year, not really fussed where I go but I'm not sure which type of engineering I should do. I'm leaning towards civil engineering but still keeping my options open. Is anyone doing an engineering course here? What's it like? Is it interesting? Was it hard to get into and are the job prospects good?

Exactly what he said!

Having said that, it can be a useful entry point into an industry you find interesting to do something else. If you have the broader ability, then the accounting background can be useful, as many general managers have poor understanding of the financials, despite being so important. You have to be careful not to be pigeon-holed though.

I see accounting as a good entrant into the business world. I'd like to do the CPA program, so that gives me 3 years of getting a basic understanding of accounting. Long term I'd like to do Finance but I've been told by a lot of people that accounting is a good skill to have long term.
