It's amusing watching players from Melbourne or whoever talking about their prospects this year. Today Gawn said something like "as we saw last year with the Bulldogs, you just have to be in good form in September to go all the way'', like it's so simple.

I don't think we'll see someone do what you guys did last year for a very long time. Not sure teams realise/appreciate how difficult it was.
We've never been held in high esteem, even our season wins have always been flukes or umpire-assisted or because key opposition players were out, or there was a bye, etc etc, so other clubs think they can easily emulate or better our achievements in 2016.

i dont think it will happen for another 15-20 years.

but the list last season was in its prime - in terms of the veterans playing an elite level, and the young players playing good. We got the most out of the list last year.

we still had 5-6 players out of best 22 in the finals. but it was an even season and we battled injuries all season, which diluted our real finishing position.

This season we haven’t got anywhere near the performances from the veterans, and the young players are all playing a level below last year.
I guess you can never say never, but I can't see it happening again.

me either :(
as a hawks supporter , you know how important your veterans were for the flags.
Just to be clear I wasn't suggesting the Dogs can't win it again, just that I don't think we'll see another team replicate what you did.

Western Bulldogs youngster Bailey Dale wants to stay at Whitten Oval

Promising Bulldogs youngster Bailey Dale says he wants to remain at the club beyond this season, with the out-of-contract forward motivated to emulate the premiership success he witnessed on the sidelines last year.

The 20-year-old was one of the Bulldogs' best in their thrilling one-point win over North Melbourne on Saturday night, racking up 18 disposals and kicking two goals.

In a season where coach Luke Beveridge admits the reigning premiers have "stagnated", Dale has been one of the few Dogs to show obvious improvement.

He has played in six of the Dogs' last seven matches, including a breakout game against St Kilda in round 10, when he kicked a goal and had 27 disposals.

  • "I'm not too sure [about contract negotiations], my manager's sorting that out, but hopefully something gets done soon and I can continue playing good footy."

The agile forward said he was pleased to finally get an extended run in the senior team and prove himself at AFL level.

"It's been good to get that continuity and to play consistent footy, which I haven't been able to do in my last two years," he said.

"But now I'm playing a few more games and getting that confidence to really grow my game in the seniors and earn my spot."

Dale said seeing his teammates experience premiership success last September, acted as a driving force for his rapid improvement.

"It certainly does [motivate you]. Obviously everyone wants to play in an AFL premiership and unfortunately I wasn't in the team at the right time to play last year," he said.

"But hopefully we can do it again this year and I can be [in the team] when it happens."

There were fears that Tom Boyd's hefty $6 million contract would make it difficult for the Bulldogs to keep their talented young list together, but so far this has not been the case.

All-Australian pair Jake Stringer and Marcus Bontempelli are locked away until the end of 2018 and 2019 respectively, while this year has seen premiership heroes Fletcher Roberts and Clay Smith recommit to the club.

Besides Dale, the other two noteworthy youngsters yet to re-sign at the Bulldogs are Lukas Webb and Mitch Honeychurch.

Both have struggled to cement their spot in Beveridge's side and could attract offers from rival clubs.

But with the salary cap set to leap 20 per cent this year through the AFL's new pay deal, the Bulldogs will have more money to entice the talented duo to stay put at the kennel.

Either the Swans, Hawks and Norf should be publicly shamed for pathetically sooking about us getting more free kicks and being umpired differently than every other team in the league or Damo should be sued by them for completely misrepresenting their protests as juvenile and unfounded. Kudos to "not my favourite player" Brendan Goddard for saying what a load of crap ( my paraphrasing) the whole issue is. Half the teams are getting about 1-1.5 frees less than us per week - hardly game changing. A bit more different in the frees against column but still not earth shattering gaps.

More importantly still waiting for careful analysis ( other than the CSI:Sydney investigation into the grand final ) of which frees we didn't deserve on the weekend or any other game other than the pointless quoting of free kick tallies. The word controversial is such a buzzword in the media but the only dispute IMO on the Higgins call was that the wrong umpire called it not that the call was wrong. And the only controversial aspect of the block on Campbell was its timing in the last quarter, not that it was incorrect. In the first quarter, no one cares.

But no the story is the ridiculous umpire/AFL plot to save the Bulldogs by gifting them enough free kicks to win a premiership and keep them in the hunt this year!

And Norf's free stats virtually identical to us last year and not much difference this year. At least we take advantage of our umpire conspirators- imagine if our free rein from the umps only got us 7 from 27. Embarrassing if they are complaining based on umpiring stats that basically match ours. Funnily enough Norf have been in top 2/3 frees for 4 of last 5 years! Wouldn't know from their coach's reactions in the coaches' box!

I liked that from Goddard. Players' perspective is that there's nothing suspect about our handballing, or at least no more than any other team.

Saw a dozen uncalled chucks from North players on Saturday anyway, so their whinging admin can blow it out their ass.

I'd be beyond embarrassed if my club went to the league complaining about some quasi-conspiracy like that, especially if they'd spent decades lathering themselves up about their "bloods culture"/"shinboner spirit"

Damien Barret doesn't know how to spell the word 'sportsmanship'. He is doing his very best to undermine everything we've achieved. He is dangerous because he has media platform. He has a responsibility and doesn't use it wisely. He is constantly petty and a whiner.

Yeah loved that from Goddard. Called it laughable. Which it is. What about the Geelong game where there could have been at least half a dozen holding the ball calls. Or the Sydney game where we got screwed and umpired "differently". Jeez it goes both ways but the simple minded folk look at a simple free kick differential. I'm still waiting for a call by call (and non-call) of our games to see what exactly is wrong with the tallies. Simply pointing out tallies is idiotic, simplistic and a slap in the face. If clubs have seriously complained about it then they've got bigger problems than they even realise. If that's occupying your time you're in denial about your own issues. I expect this from fans. But to come from actual teams is honestly concerning. Concerning for those teams. It's grasping at straws really

Do not know if I am getting to defensive but I have a gut full of the negatives about our history making flag. Especially Swans and North supporters. I can only put it down to jealously.

Comments like you only won because you throw the ball and the umpires favour you. The dogs are the worst premiership side in history.

It is amazing it seemed like everyone other than swans fans were supporting us to win the flag and we win in then they turn jealous.

Well suck it up we won it with the best collective 4 weeks in history and every other team that thinks that they will waltz in finish 7th or 8th play 2 interstate finals and win the flag think again it is not easy and only a super performance will get there.

Yes if we do not make I will support the Dees during the finals and if they happened to win it it will be well deserved and I will not be saying that they only won because of the umps.

It's a tall poppy syndrome. When was the last time someone won a flag and someone didn't try to discredit it in some way?

Cats were given a leg up by father sons, they had "the weapon".
Sydney had COLA.

It's all sour grapes by those minnow other clubs.

Hawks and cats must have been cheating the salary cap. Geelong should have lost in 09 because Hawkins hit the post in the 2nd quarter (ok that was flat out disgraceful but it happened in the 2nd quarter! Saints blew it so many times. It's like our prelim against them the week before. We sooked about the Riewoldt dive, the Aker deliberate and the touched goal at the end (that was at a crucial time though). At the end of the day we had our chances to win that game and blew it. Winning the flag makes you realise you control your own destiny 99% of the time)
Collingwood would have been beaten if there was extra time, because the saints were on top in the last quarter and despite the break after the 4th qtr, they would have 100% been guaranteed to maintain that in both extra time periods.

West coast were on cocain, port and Brisbane got given players etc etc

It'll happen until the end of time in this country.

Nobody used that to discredit the flag though. They used it throughout the year but not the flag.
That's because they had won 3 in a row. People can't continue to make excuses for that long because it's only after 3 successive years they realise they sound stupid

Illegitimate premierships would be GWS ( concessions they got is just so much it's uncompetitive for the rest of the comp) and perhaps Essendon because they received the number 1 pick because they were crap in the year their players were banned for cheating. How the AFL allowed that to happen is beyond me

Melbourne are getting an easy run.

Tanking and draft rorting caused them to get some good picks which either ended up well for them or gave them some good trading assets.
Getting two compensation picks for Scully when we got 1 for Ward....yet somehow the AFL favours us apparently.

Melbourne are a tricky one in that regard. The AFL have certainly given them a leg-up whereas if it were saints, dogs or norf they would have shipped us off.
