BEVO CHALLENGES DOGS FREE KICK CRITICS

- Gilbert Gardiner

Premiership coach Luke Beveridge has rubbished reports the Western Bulldogs are the umpires' pets.

AFL clubs reportedly made complaints to the league about the Bulldogs getting special treatment.

Beveridge bit back at Whitten Oval today.

"I know for a fact that there was some strong inquiries made at the end of last year around certain things (involving the Bulldogs)," Beveridge said.

"I don't know. It's not something that I should comment on, I don't think.

"It would really surprise me if a club would go to the umpiring department and... question the impartiality of the umpiring. It's pretty serious if any teams are doing that."

Clubs have been known to seek clarification from the umpiring department in the past, specially around rule interpretations.

"But to actually question that there is an imbalance and a favouritism, if that's happened, it's extremely concerning."

The Bulldogs, who lead the completion in free kick differential, won the frees (26-14) in a landslide last week against North Melbourne.

Adelaide (+12) and West Coast (+11) last week won their respective free kick counts in losing games.

Beveridge issued the challenge for "anyone" to assess the Bulldogs win over North Melbourne and identify the wrong decisions.

"We probably don't hold on to the ball long enough at times and get caught holding the ball because we're always moving it around," he said.

"We position ourselves in front, as forwards as defenders, when you're in that position you always give away less free kicks and we're by and large not clumsy.

"Every side that I've ever coached has been that way and there's some advantages in it, people keep looking at the raw numbers without bothering to do their homework and come to us with answers around quality or the actual errant decisions they think are made because they're just not there, there's one or two but that's about it."

Tom Liberatore is only expected to miss one game with a corked leg, while Marcus Bontempelli will continue to play long midfield minutes after a trial playing forward did not work.

"We're pretty sure that they'll probably run with him tomorrow so we got to be prepared for that," Beveridge said.

"Our midfield were very instrumental in our victory for three quarters but then we went to sleep for a little bit in the last so our mandate is to play four quarters.

"We know he can be very dangerous and cause some headaches to the opposition up forward, one of the reasons why he probably played a more consistent midfield was to not so much (help) our midfield but our forward line.

"To settle something down there, we felt our forwards worked together as good as they have probably in the last two and a half years last week so we've got to find the right balance."

The umpiring complaining among coaches was always going to get worse in the game - it happens in every professional sport, complaining about calls that should have gone your way but silent on the ones that did. It can be a way of deflecting attention away from your own team's performance.

Interestingly, if you watch a lot of US sports they don't often complain about the number of penalties/fouls - although it does happen - more the ones that came at critical times or looked plainly wrong. Same in soccer, where it's generally around penalties/red cards/offside decisions that affect goals rather than how many fouls each team committed.

It's weird that the metric here seems to be - not just among fans, but presumably clubs and coaches now given the chatter - the actual free kick count, rather than a few contentious ones that "didn't go our way". It's just bonkers to assess umpiring based on numbers of free kicks, unbelievably simplistic in a complicated game.
I don't even think they have a free kick count as a stat in Soccer.

Sydney fans are the most amunsing. They claimed they got robbed in the grand final but can hardly name an incorrect decision. They're also happy to ignore decisions that didn't go our way - JJ's overturned goal which was nowhere near conclusive enough to overturn, and the free kick against JJ in the first quarter where Naismith put his foot into JJ's chest.

Then you had Round 2 this year where they're all complaining about the rushed behind... They clearly don't know the rules because as per this years rules that's deliberate and by previous years' rules that's deliberate.

Blaming the umpires is an easy way out of a loss, even if it's not a close game. Fans and coaches not being able to comprehend losing and digging deep to find an exterior reason for their loss even if its ridiculous. It shows the lack of quality in journalism in this country that some journos have started jumping on this bullshit - Yes, I know some have analysed it for what it is and given logical explanations for why we win free kicks - contested possession/tackle/discipline.

I can't believe it either, Bevo. "Someone" has been trawling the Umpiring thread and come up with this myth.

In their defense there is a 9.4 free kick differential swing when they're playing at home vs playing away. They can't really be expected to have a firm grasp of the adjudication of our game when it can be swayed so significantly by a home crowd environment.

Yet the AFL and football media continue to piss around with insignificant one off incidences rather than acknowledge actual causes of umpire inconsistencies in the sport.

Are we really expected to believe that Sydney are a 10 free kick more disciplined team at home? And West Coast 9 free kicks more disciplined at home?

And if they are, is it just a coincidence that GWS and GC with no supporters are only 1 or 2 free kicks more disciplined?

Doesn't quite stack up. But no let's concentrate on correct rulings off touchy frees at significant times in matches so the umpire committee can continue to claim they get everything right...

Those "someones" trawling the Umpiring Board might actually think that Plugger is a rational poster

The former channel 9 minor celeb(sacked) was at it again today . Just caught him moaning about what clubs are doing "wrong". Breaking news try winning the footy.
If he's so enamoured with stats, his club were thrashed in contested ball, and breaking news if you ain't got the friggin thing ,no free kicks .

Along with Norf supporters whining about how hard done by they are, you should have seen/heard them on the occasions when they've gotten lucky with the umpires.

There was that final a few years ago where a blatant holding the ball against Cunnington didn't get called at a crucial stage, and a game against Port Adelaide where they won the free kick count 38-10 or something.

Their pissant supporters nearly broke the sound barrier with their whining that the umpiring never affects the outcome of a game and people are just having sour grapes and we're all big meanies and leave their poor widdle club alone.

Norf supporters. Would not piss on them if they were on fire.

They are shit on your shoe. Terribly annoying when you trod in it, but needs to be dealt with. Scrape it left, scrape it right, no matter what you do though it just finds its way deeper in to the tread and hangs around longer than you'd hope.

Norf jibes aside, Bevo's face re: Bewick's comments was great. "Who?" Sick burn.

Luke Beveridge rejects suggestion Western Bulldogs lack hunger
· Warwick Green

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has rejected criticism his premiership team has lost its hungry edge this season, but conceded that "sometimes you take a little step back to go forward".

Despite rallying to within one point in the final term, the Dogs were predominantly outplayed in their seven-point loss to West Coast at Etihad Stadium and their season is now teetering on the brink with seven wins from 14 matches and a crucial Friday night match looming against the Crows at Adelaide Oval.

Eagles resist Bulldogs fightback
The West Coast Eagles have resisted a Western Bulldogs fightback to claim an upset win, 12.15.87 to 11.14.80.

Beveridge said he did not believe the widespread perception that the Dogs were suffering from a lack of hunger and desire due to a premiership hangover.

"Hunger's an interesting word when it comes to your preparation and your week-to-week approach to the game, but I'm never going to question our team's and our individuals' hunger," he said. "You've just got to try to improve them."

Beveridge conceded the Eagles were clearly superior for three quarters, saying "composure and execution with the ball cost us" and acknowledging the Dogs were "smashed through the midfield" where they lost the centre clearances 14-7.
But he was pleased with their fight and effort in the final term, during which the Dogs banged on four consecutive goals to draw within a point and give themselves a chance to pinch the game.

He conceded that his team had too few contributors. Backman Jason Johannisen was again quiet after close attention from defensive forward Mark Hutchings, while the mercurial Jake Stringer barely touched the ball for three quarters.

Johannisen has struggled after opposition teams have targeted and buffeted him for the past month, and Beveridge said that while there were ways he could improve he was not expecting the dashing backman to produce a 30-disposal game. "He's doing his best to fight against it and his teammates are trying to fly the flag when they need to ... as long as he focuses on the team-based aspect of it for 100 per cent of the game".

Beveridge also defended the decision not to send a run-with player to Andrew Gaff (42 disposals), saying that the Eagle played in a variety of positions and "ultimately he's not anywhere long enough for you to settle anything that doesn't pull you apart [structurally]".

Eagles coach Adam Simpson said it was pleasing to record a rare win in Melbourne.

"We know we've been poor over here, the last three games [and] two of them were blowouts," Simpson said.

"We tweaked a couple of things, but I think in general the players were pretty brave today.

"We had two down halfway through the third – two defenders down, as well [the injured Sam Butler and Sharrod Wellingham]."

Simpson was pleased the Eagles responded when challenged in the final term, saying "trying to stop momentum has been really tough this year for us at stages".

When ruckman Nathan Vardy kicked a goal to extend the Eagles' lead from one point to seven points in the dying stages, the Eagles emptied the forward line and sent numbers behind the ball.

"They got a bit excited, the boys, they tried to park the bus, even though there was still four minutes to go," Simpson chuckled.

West Coast is likely to regain a host of key players for its match against Port Adelaide at Domain Stadium next Sunday evening, with captain Shannon Hurn, forwards Josh Kennedy and Mark Le Cras and midfielder Matt Priddis all expected to be available for selection.

A short message to any whinging, moaning, p***ant Swans theatregoers...I mean fans.

The best part about the 2016 GF is that no matter how many I watch it and no matter how the free kick count ended up, we win it every single freakin time. Every time.

So, get it through your thick skulls that we will forever be the 2016 premiers and your bunch of flogs choked. Blame the umps, but you thought you had it in the bag and you dead set flopped. The fact the bitterness is so strong still makes me giggle.

Funny stat about the COLAs

They're the only team to lose a grand final to each of the 1925 VFA expansion teams, 2 of those teams have been historically unsuccessful also.

The game day thread was full of, someone complained about umpires, so now they are against us conspiracies.
We know, you don't believe in shit umpiring in Perth or Sydney despite stats.

But it's amusing you don't see that bitching by the Scotts and Flogmire have ended in our games being umpired poorly.

All i need to do is come up with 2 instances of poor decisions leading to wet toast goals or non goals to dogs. So here's two for you .. holding on picken in the goal square which was plain as the nose on your face. Not paid, free kick wet toast instead.

Dogs get within a point. Dodgy wet toast free kick, goal.

By the way that non advantage call was another momentum killer. Please tell us that Dahlhaus should have kicked the goal .. yeah he should have but that is advantage every day of the week

Wallis push in the back leading to dogs goal?
Eagles man in front would have been a shot in goal from the forward pocket not payed.

There's plenty across a game, when you lose you blame the ones affecting you.

Say what you want, but we are no different than other club boards when it comes to umpires sooking IMO.
