I feel like that too, but I’m a natural pessimist about this stuff. Alternatively, we get a rest after being up for multiple weeks in a row where we needed to win to keep finals alive. Refresh and then kick on.

I can’t see how we’re a third of the price of the giants for the flag - at full strength (which they will virtually be) they’ve troubled most teams. I suppose there’s confidence we could win four in a row and they’re unlikely to.

Well actually I am far more optimistic than most. Here is why. I watched a couple of early season games and the style of play was not too dissimilar to the last three. the difference being that we were really spasmodic in terms of form. lots of possessions, but really poor kicking and terrible delivery. it all seemed to click against essendon. hope we can march on to win the flag.,GO DOGS!!!

THE WESTERN Bulldogs famously proved that anything was possibly during their fairytale 2016 finals campaign.But Bulldogs forward Aaron Naughton doesn't need to take the word of his premiership teammates to know that; he witnessed it first-hand. As the Dogs broke their 62-year flag drought on the first day of October three years ago, Naughton was in the MCG crowd after playing in the Under-17 NAB Futures game earlier that day.


A little over 12 months later, he would be drafted to the Bulldogs with pick No.9 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft. "I was actually sitting in the crowd that day," Naughton said. "It was pretty exciting to see what they experienced but it's a very different group this time around."

Although that premiership was just three seasons ago, only eight of the flag-winning 22 played last weekend against Adelaide, with an additional four (Dale Morris, Tom Liberatore, Tory Dickson and Caleb Daniel) on the injury list.Naughton will be one of up to 11 Bulldogs who will run out in their first final against Greater Western Sydney on Saturday – a moment he admits he has been dreaming about for some time."I definitely have (been dreaming about final footy). Obviously I play footy to hopefully at one stage win a flag, and to play finals every year is the aim," the 20-year-old said."I'm definitely looking forward to running out there in my first final and having a really good crack at it."

Naughton's opponent is likely to be Giants co-captain and star defender Phil Davis.The pair went head-to-head for the whole match just a fortnight ago, in the Bulldogs' 61-point win in round 22.Honours were pretty even at the end of the contest, with Naughton held to eight disposals, five marks and 2.2."We had a pretty solid match-up," Naughton said.

"Obviously he's experienced and a very good defender and I'll be looking forward to that match-up no doubt."


The second-year Bulldog has had a fantastic season, leading the League in contested marks (53) and kicking 30 goals from 22 games.

I'm tipping Naughton to light it up in as many finals as he plays. He's the sort who revels on the big stage and he won't be daunted.

I have the same feeling about Bailey Smith. I can see him announcing himself with a dominant 2 goal 25 disposal rag doll performance in a final.

I was thinking this too, the confidence and toughness he plays with, I reckon he’ll love the big stage!

One thing's for sure either way, the experience of a finals campaign so early in their careers should be invaluable.

It's getting to the point where we've got nearly as many people in the current team who were in the crowd that day as on the field.

Lipinski, Rhylee and Naughts. Although Westy would have known he'd likely end up at the kennel, Pat would have been hoping and who knows what Naughts was thinking.

I know I’m totally biased but I don’t think Bailey Smith is getting nearly the outside recognition he deserves. As a few have pointed out, a bunch of the AFL media team didn’t even have him in their top 5 for rising star nomination.

I am less surprised that he wasn’t in the 22 under 22 as that is fan voted but if you were to go off actual performance, statistical output, and his manner on and off the field he is easily in there.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if he captains the 22 under 22 within the next few.

He was talking about the ‘16 grand final and went onto say ‘I’m actually a Colling...I was a Collingwood supporter.’

AFLPA award no different. Stack with hype and highlights gets 60+ votes, Bailey with no hoopla gets 16. Sam Walsh ( worthy winner ) is preordained in round 1 and constantly rammed down our throats as the winner gets 400, Bailey Smith ( ranked no.1 in AFL player rankings for first year players), barely mentioned outside of Fox Footy commentary about him being a good kid but Walsh blah blah, and pushed out of limelight by our Big 3 and Astronaught, barely known by the players who voted.


EDIT: And Jarryn Geary comes third in most courageous player, playing 5 games!

Difference between us, GWS and Sydney in 16 was we didnt have those few underperforming players on the day. Guys like Cameron or Rohan who were just spectators.

The best surprise for finals will be Richards, Schache, Dale playing out of their skins. No passengers
