Does anything strike you as weird about this article?

Great news on Cody, btw

Other than leading with an attention grabbing photo of a former Bulldog who has spent too much time in a solarium ... no, not really.

Also, Regan has a bit to learn...
Instead of saying about Will Darcy "He’s a really exciting prospect in terms of what he can do on field and a really good person off it" he should be saying Will is "obviously a player we have some interest in because of his family connections, but we haven't made any decisions yet. He's very raw and unproven and a completely different prospect to Sam at the same age."

He's just inviting some club to make us burn more draft points than we'd like. They now know (in case there was ever any doubt) that we are never going to pass on him unless they bid first round or something equally stupid.

Hopefully there will be a bit of mutual civility when it gets down to the third or fourth round of the draft.

even though the article is about another player and some general stuff about our drafting possibilities

So the HS thinks people will only read an article about us if they think it's going to be about Sniff?

Sounds a bit like younger Darcy wasn't too sure on whether to pursue footy full time or not. Could work out well for us if he flies under the radar....
Definitely seems to have plenty of development left which is exciting, could become a real gem for us & from what I’ve read he played mostly midfield growing up as he didn’t have a growth spurt until very late. Makes sense why his skills & athletic abilities are his standout qualities & likely more growth to come, as we know Sam was still growing in height when we drafted him. You’d imagine Will gets to the 200cm mark.

The key pick number for us with regards to Darcy is pick 37.

A little mentioned FS bid matching rule is that any bid 37 and beyond can be matched by a clubs next available pick.

So as long as no-one bids on Darcy by pick 37 (seems unlikely🤞), we can match with 70 without any concern for deficits.

Based on that, the club obviously isn't hoping to trade up in the draft using 70, as we'd be left high and dry if we traded up then a club bid on Darcy afterwards.

HS staying true to form. Never overestimate your reading audience.

Or maybe it was just plain ignorance or laziness on the part of a sub-editor.
"Got any pics of Western Bulldogs players we can put with that story?"
"Western Bulldogs? Never heard of them. Hang on, I'll look them up ... oh here we are ... it's the club Bailey Smith came from. That'll do. I've got a few of him. Quite a few in fact."

Not necessarily, because we also hold 74 which could also be used to match a Darcy bid.

Or we could use 70&74 to trade up and match Darcy with 89.

All could be done live depending on how the picks unfold.

We could look at something like that once the draft reached pick 37 (by which time the picks will have moved up the order).

Clearly lots of things agitate me about the stupid media and supporter derived narratives that envelop the club like a noxious fart. But the one about McCartney building the foundations on which 2016 was built upon is the dumbest of them all. One would think that if the foundations were in place then we would've seen a steady rise up the ladder, but we were bumping our arses in the lower reachers of the ladder and going nowhere that the players revolted to such an extent that it finally forced the hand of our historically inert and conservative club to send McCartney packing.

It was only when the siege mentality of McCarthyism was lifted that we saw an immediate increase in output and rise up the ladder.

The idea that anybody needed to install a hard nosed professionalism into the likes of Boyd, Morris or Murphy was always a real reach.
The funny thing is I sort of get where some people come from re: McCartney and bringing in things that he learnt being part of a successful culture at Geelong. The issue is when people credit that to McCartney rather than it just being by definition something that would have been brought from the footy department of any club.

He actually did make huge differences from before his time. McCartney insisted on being more methodical in scouting, drafting and list management. Before him, a lot of it was just "vibes" (see Christian Howard etc. draft pick) rather than understanding that we had to identify strengths and weaknesses, go into the draft with a ranking and a plan, and understand how we wanted to develop players to play roles via a club-controlled VFL team (that we didn't have) before we picked them. That's par for the course for us and every team now, but it wasn't in 2012, and that made a difference. Paul Roos did a similar thing for Melbourne when he went there too.

When we hired him we were sucked into the winning culture element but there's plenty of assistants and plenty of past successful clubs. Even when we hired Bevo we learnt from our mistakes and learnt that we had to hire someone who could communicate better to young people. But Bevo also learnt football department operations from a successful Collingwood and Hawthorn team, it didn't have to be something that set McCartney unquiely above other options (because it wasn't unique).

The thing is, I agree with everything in your post, but wanted to add the above.

If he puts on some condition would he project to be a Harris Andrews type of KPD?

It reminds me a bit of English who played some midfield and then shot up (and also of Sam, who apparently left the recruiting team gobsmacked when he walked into the club after the 2020 COVID write-off season having grown about 15cm).

If the skills are there he will adjust. Good agility and skill in a tall player is a massive weapon.

Has anyone read the HS article this morning re Marra?
Anything in there we didn’t really know?
Nothing really noteworthy in that article. Just a fluff piece.

Bains is clearly very close with Jamarra and had direct access to all personal medical records throughout the last 12 months or so.

Ok thanks 👍
We never know the confidential info just thought there might be a little there.

I didn’t dislike McCartney at the time but I believe time has shown him to be the worst coach in bulldog history.

2012-2014 Bulldogs are at least the most underperforming Bulldogs side I’ve seen in my lifetime (I didn’t realise it at the time). The 2012 season, in particular, was the worst football I’ve ever watched from us including the rhode years. The list in hindsight wasn’t that bad. The 2014 side was a finals team. McCartney just had no idea how to get the most out of the older players.

Morris – I would’ve delisted him back then. Under McCartney’s game plan he was used as a switch outlet, which made no sense — he didn’t have the kicking penetration for that role. Under Eade and Beveridge, though, he was brilliant.

Boyd – A complete ball butcher. By the end of 2013, I thought it was him or Cross who should’ve been delisted, and Cross was in better form. Boyd ended up becoming an All-Australian and premiership half-back under Beveridge.

Picken – Was getting dropped in 2014 and probably would’ve been delisted if not contracted. Beveridge moved him forward, and he became a weapon at half-forward, a premiership player, and our leading goal kicker in 17.

Higgins – Missed a lot of McCartney’s early years through injury but played the full 2014 season. Was poor and even dropped a few times while playing half-back. Left for North and became their best player (All Australian?)

Murphy – One of only two players at the time I thought would make any other club’s best 22. Still, he was a much better player once Beveridge took over. All Australian in 2015

Jones – Not all McCartney’s fault, but he was left isolated as the lone full forward. Never got proper support. Could’ve been a decent forward with structure around him. Ended up turning into an A-grade defender later in his career.

Roughead – Mostly used as a full-back and was regularly beaten on the lead. In and out of the side in 2014. Moved to ruck under Beveridge and was a solid best-22 player through to 2018.

Easton Wood – Had some injury issues, but in 2013–14 was forced to play as an undersized key defender and regularly outmatched. I still remember him being rag-dolled by Darling in Round 1, 2013. Beveridge used him properly as an intercept defender, and he became All-Australian in 2015 — the most influential player in the comp that year. That season was as good as you’ll ever see.

Brian Lake – He was terrible under McCartney, looked finished. Went to Hawthorn, won three flags, and a Norm Smith. Says it all.

Dickson – A stretch this on as he came in as a mature-age recruit and was hit or miss, maybe one good game in three. Later became our most consistent goal kicker under Beveridge.

The only guys I can think of that played their best footy under McCartney were Griffin, Minson and arguable Libba (and only because of injury)

If you look at the younger players underpinning this older group it’s a travesty how bad they were over that period. This was probably Tom Libbas prime pre knee injuries. Specifically 14 there was Macrae, Stringer, JJ, Dahlhouse (apologies about the spelling), hunter a very young Bont and even guys like Jong, Redpath, T Campbell and K Steven’s were capable contributors (also Crameri - who was better than just a contributor).

There probably a bunch I’ve guys I’m missing aswell that could’ve been contributors in a good side.

I’ll give him some credit for stabilising the football department and recruitment structure as that did seem to improve significantly under him.

In one of the earliest Danny Boyd podcast episodes, Tom Boyd said that when Bevo came in he more or less told the group they couldn't play footy. Turns out he was right.

I heard it that he told them they believed they couldn’t play footy. He made them believe that they could.

Interesting. I remember bevo being on SEN just after he took over (I think it was with ox and whoever he used to do his show with) , and he was asked what the expectations were and he said finals and he was laughed out of the room. I reckon bevo took that seriously at the time as it was a stern response back!

One thing about the bevo coached bulldogs is there has been very few games I have given them zero chance to win.

Two games I remember where I counted them out Brisbane 2023 rd 3- win and Essendon 2018 rd 3 or 4 - win. Both on the back of atrocious starts.
