God I hope we don't get Thursday nights.
Why?

As long as we don't have to play consecutive 6 day breaks to get to Thursday then I don't see a problem with them

Great exposure for us imo, would you rather we get Sunday twilights like we pioneered under McCartney?
I think they schedule it when it's school holidays.
Nope

It's when clubs are well rested such as at the start of the season or during the bye rounds they do them

The AFLPA endorsed 5 day breaks to be abolished a couple of seasons ago except if it were special occasion like ANZAC Day. IIRC only Fremantle, St Kilda and Brisbane have played off 5 day breaks in the last couple of years outside of Collingwood/Essendon, they all played Thursday night the following week after a Saturday game the week before.

Thursday night footy only works when played interstate. Adelaide and Perth both packed out there venues when they had it. Personally enjoy Thursday night footy as it means more footy on more days.

I think we will get 2 Thursday night games this year, and from memory i think Gil has stated they will stay at a 5 week block of Thursday games this year, which to me seems like a good number.
Agreed they work well in SA/WA, though Sydney had one against Port and the crowd was very underwhelming

IIRC only Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood, Port, Sydney, Adelaide, Hawthorn and Freo got Thursday nighters this year

If we played Adelaide away it would be good for us for exposure.

Wouldn't mind going to one here in Melbourne, just a different night for it, I normally don't have Uni on Friday's so works out for me, but I'd understand people with young families or people who work early on Friday's wouldn't want to go.

Because I play footy and Thursday nights are training and selection.
Meh

What do you do when we play Saturday arvo and twilight games? You'd struggle to get to them I'd expect because of your footy commitments?

I umpire junior footy on Sundays, I missed a couple of Sunday games the last couple of years because of it, doesn't bother me if I miss a game or two because of it, though I try to work around it if I can like request early morning u10/12s and be done by 11-1130.

Saturday arvo are out too. Saturday night works and are probably best.
We can't exactly request a time change either.

That's true, but imo it's a selfish way of saying no to Thursday night footy, it's not exactly a weekly timeslot, it only happens 5-6 times a season and we'd only get 1 or 2 games in the slot if we were awarded it via some sort of Bradbury decision.

TV audiences gain ratings, if we rate well then CH7 will request us in prime time more often the following season. Everyone cracked it when Carltank got so much of it this year, problem was they rated better than Norf last season even though Norf were the superior performing team compared to them, hence why they got the nod when they shouldn't have.

We only got 10 games on FTA CH7 Vic this season including our final, we rated better than the 2 afternoon finals games also (except WCE Hawthorn that week as that was Fri night). Every interstate club gets their local team shown on their local CH7 provider every week, we don't have that same luxury, we have to compete against the big Melbourne clubs to fight for our share of 4 FTA games a round here in Victoria which we have not got much of since 2010 IIRC. Currently, Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood, Hawthorn and Geelong are winning on that front, Essendon and Norf are slightly behind while Us, Melbourne and St Kilda are miles behind the rest. It's an unfair disadvantage compared to the rest of the comp that these 3 Melbourne teams have had to put up with while they've been down the bottom of the ladder, while interstate strugglers still get their games on their FTA networks. The remedy is fans of those 3 clubs have Foxtel or are prepared to go to games every week which gets expensive.

Anyways, that's my take on it, I only want what's best for our club.

FWIW I'll also add

In 2012, Essendon played only 2 ******* Sunday games that whole season and their 2 Sunday games were in consecutive weeks late in the season. They also played 8 ******* Saturday night games in a row at one stage that year, and Carlton had something like 17-18 games on FTA. The next season Essendon played only 4 games on Sunday, a slight improvement, but nevertheless still an absolute farce. Last year we copped 15 Sunday games and our only regular FTA exposure was Sunday 320s, that shit makes my blood boil at how disadvantaged we are, we had only 8 this year for a change but we still got no Friday nights compared to Carlton who got 6 + a Thursday and they finished only one spot ahead of us on the ladder.

Ever since we've bottomed out I've taken a great interest in the fixture due to our horrible exposure/lack of Friday nights and only want things to be on equal parity. What we have faced recently is beyond a joke and for us to work this hard and be relevant again and not a pushover has been a credit to the way Peter Gordon and co have gone about it.

It is a fallacy that form gets rewarded with prime time opportunities and more equitable treatment in the filtering of the competition.

Tis to an extent, Sydney and Port have had increased FTA prime time lately though.

The $FL need to retract their statement of Friday night is theirs that they made in 2012 and become transparent that if you rate well, you get prime time.

Essendon and Carlton were bottom 4, it'll be interesting to see how much more exposure they get over Melbourne and St Kilda who finished ahead of them this year.

It might balance out a little, but it'll never swing in favour of St Kilda/Melbourne to the extent that the other clubs are systematically offered the advantage.

You must remember that Ch7 will select their games based on their prime sponsors. If those same sponsors also have sponsorship with a team, then that team will get preference over a team that has other or opposition sponsors ie if Ch7 has a deal with Toyota (for example) then they would try to avoid televising a team that has a Mazda sponsorship. This doesn't work for times when there is a single game on like a Friday night but does on a Sat or Sun afternoon.

If you're referring one of your players to the AFL integrity department over a conversation he might've had with his brother

Then you're surely going to also, retrospectively, refer everyone who played a role insending Clay Smith back on to an AFL venue back in May after he had been diagnosed as suffering a third ruptured ACL. Can't pick and choose when it comes to integrity.

My personal favourite from Damo's sliding doors this week

"IF you're prepared to take a swing at a man the size of Jon Patton".....

"THEN you've got no fear at the moment you take the swing"

What great journalism Damo, even though their was a million other GWS related topics you could have chosen to write about but instead you really hit the nail on the head. Deserve a massive pay rise Damo :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
