Wood made a very good point in his interview that the all-dogs VFL side made the jump up to senior level a lot easier for debutants because they allready play the same way.

Such a good investment.
It helps when blokes can actually play their role in the seconds instead of being dicked around by another club

I know it's a bit late but I just watched replay of 360 from the other night on IQ, and can't believe how much Gerard and Slobbo were banging on about Callum Mills and how good he's been yadda yadda, he will win the Rising Star yadda yadda..are they for real?
It's criminal how overrated some of these high draft picks are. Petrraca was the Messiah before he even played a single game, Oliver was a superstar after 1 game, Parish the same thing..etc etc.

Yet not a mention of Caleb Daniel, who statistically has em all beat, and convincingly as well.
What about after the Hawks game where Bevo sent him to shut down Sam Mitchell, which he did, as well as racking up 29 touches, 8 marks, 1 goal and 6 tackles. If that was a top 10 draft pick they would have spent an hour on 360 dissecting that performance followed by demanding the AFL build a statue outside the MCG for him.

I'm not sure if I've missed something but I've heard pretty much every player being pumped up by the media for the Rising Star except Caleb Daniel. Haven't heard a single commentator mention him. Even in Slobbo and Gerard's list of top 5 choices to win the Rising Star last week Caleb wasn't in neither of their top 5. Seriously? What else does this kid have to do.

Needs to improve his contested marking.

Don't really care whether he gets recognised or not. They only build you up to cut you down. Just look at Stringer.

Our players, coaches and fans love him, and that's all that matters.
Keep hearing Jake is overrated. AA at 21, think some are expecting too much.

Has had injury & off field issues weighing him down and is still on track for close to 50 goals this season.

Don't see how he's overrated at all. Just whining pissants cut up because there's nobody remotely as talented or entertaining on their list.

Rising Star means SFA. Hogan won it last year and look what that did for him. He has turned into a lazy crab of a player this year. Look at how Lewis Taylors career is going. No rising star for us thanks.

It means SFA, sure... But there is no correlation with winning it and subsequent performance.

It would be good for Caleb to get some recognition for his performances. Nonetheless it is both unlikely and not very meaningful.

That is basically my point. The players dont really gain anything from it. Brian Lake once said that the Western Bulldogs have historically had too much focus on the individual. I don't like him or have much respect for Brian Lake, he seems to say things just to get attention, but he could be right about that. We have the equal most Brownlow medalists and the equal least flags out of the original teams. **** individual awards like Rising Star. Who needs them? Caleb should get more validation from being part of a winning team than from some shitty meaningless award.

I'd cop that if Lake wasn't one of the most individualistic players I've ever seen in the tricolours.

We've never had too much focus on the individual. We've traditionally been a poor club, we got reamed by the recruiting zoning, and we've been forced to sell players to stay afloat.

So what if the supporters made cult figures of the precious few that stuck around? It's a result of the lack of success, not the root cause.

I wouldn't cop it because it's a load of hogwash. It was a load of hogwash when Brian said and it was a load of hogwash when Chris Grant said it (blessed be the ground he walks on).
Name one time since 1989 a player has held the club to ransom and they caved? Doug Hawkins was forced to play for Fitzroy, West, Grant, Cross, and so on were either retired early or wished well in their future endeavors.
Ryan Griffen came to the club and handed out an ultimatum "him or the coach" we chose the coach. Then were forced to sack him because his job was untenable.

Yes our supporters, as you said Ozil, celebrate the individual as a exercise in preserving our sanity but the club is no worse than any other in that regard. Well not until we sack a premiership winning coach to install a favourite son who then presides over several years of mediocrity or worse results in heavy club sanctions and the suspension of half our playing list.

why do you think we got him at 46. It the same reasons. And don't get too caught up in this rising star crap, it's so over rated, Lewis Taylor won it!

Gerard Healy has been staunch on Caleb winning the RS.

Although if Weitering plays many more like yesterday he will be hard to beat.

From the AFL site....

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-06-05/after-the-siren-flags-are-built-on-backlines-like-the-bulldogs

LUKE Beveridge was the defensive mastermind who crafted a Hawthorn backline containing just one true key defender into a major weapon in consecutive premierships.

Now in his second season with the Western Bulldogs as senior coach, he hasn't taken his eye off that part of the ground for one moment. As the 2016 season reaches the halfway point, his backline is the most miserly in the competition, conceding just 760 points so far, an average of 69.1 per game.

Making the feat all the more remarkable - and this points to Beveridge's true genius - is that the Dogs have been without captain and spiritual leader Robert Murphy since round four, rebound specialist Jason Johannisen since round five and have also missed key players Easton Wood and Matt Suckling at critical junctures.
There is more in the article....
