He just seems to slow.

He may have had a great season last year, but he's a year older, and the competition seems to be quicker than last year.

I hate to be the devils advocate, but this could be Glen Jakovich's last year in AFL football. :(

Some will see its a slap in the face, but in 6 games he has had 78 disposals. He's plagued by injury, and this is the beginning of the end. And i hate to say it, but 2001 could be the end for Jako.

He's only chance of getting back on track in the AFL, is losing weight and try and gain some speed and fitness.

Never going to get speed back, reconstruction stuffed him.

Carey/Lowe role at CHF is IMO the only option for him.

We must build a new defence and it probably means using our draft picks to snare two top defenders.

The problem with young key position players is they take ages to develop.

The majority don't start playing football that could be considred AFL standard till their 21. And then they don't start playing high standard till their 23.

I think our best bet as far as key defenders, is to try and snare one from another club (which i already suggested with Nicholson from Melbourne).

is jakovich still tradable??

i know it would be an insult to him and to what he's done for the club, but i just think that ever since he put on all that body weight, hes gotten considerably slower

he should start losing all that muscle and try to get some of that speed he used to have if he wants to stay in defence

its a tough call but the club needs to make some tough decisions this year if they dont want to keep sliding backwards

i suggested trading him 2 years ago
people called me an idiot
we could have had a defender like Hay by now if we had traded him then, its harder to trade him now
hes been more servicable to the club, no way we can do it now
make him loose weight, practice sprinting, and stick him on a forward flank, and pray

it is sad to see this kind of downfall for jakovich but i dont think we should just stick him at half forward and hope, thats no good

either he loses weight, gets traded or retires, one of those things must happen.... we've got too many players injured to carry ones that arent performing

Jakovich isn't tradable. A club may get 2002 out of him, if their lucky.

I would say he's about 95% chance to retire at this rate.

As Iceman and eagleskickass said, what a tragic downfall.

I think they should play Jak at CHF. He could not do any worse than Carroll. You always need a focal point for players down field to look for. As long as he makes a contest he will bring our small players into the game. After saying that I would play Turnbull at CHB (Until Glass is back) Gardy and Cox in the Ruck.

We have not been able to do this because of injuries to Turnbull (Pre season) Glass and Gardy.

Jak always fires up in the forward line - just dont have him kick for goal!!!

You just cannot throw Jak on the scrap heap.

Go Eagles!;)

How quickly you ealge supporter turn on your greatist player.
To tell you the truth im disgusted.
He is in his last few years, why trade him??

I think he is owed the privilege of playing where ever the hell he wants.

Personally I would put him in the ruck as a back up for gardiner.
He has the experiecned and is a strong mark and a leader.

Stick him in the ruck or forward pocket.

Lift your game eagle supporters!

When people were asking if Jako is tradable i think they were more just trying to say that he has become a liability, rather than actually contemplate him being traded. But sabre is right, we can not seriously even consider trading Jako. The guy has earned the right to play where he wants, and should not have to cop this kind of criticism from his own teams supporters

Jako has to be moved out of defence. We can no longer rely on him running with an opponent, so the best move would be to move him to half-forward, get him to be a presence up front.

Jako has become a liability in defence.

He's just gone on such a quick downward trip, that he is really ordinary when picking up a player.

He has to tried in the forward line, or come of the interchange for bursts.

We're playing football here. It's a harsh world. Forget about the past. Live in the present and try and look for the future.
If he's not good enough he's not good enough.
The club is in a tough predicemant here. And for the sake of the club, and for his own reputation, i hope that Jako decides to retire at the end of this year, unless we find a use for him somewhere else (but i don't think we will).
It would be shame for him to keep playing on, thinking its going to turn around, only to have bags of goals consistently kicked on him.

To be a good ruckman you need to be able to jump to get to ball down to the small guys. Jako can barely move with wear and tear from his career. He has strength so he can oppose boundary throw-ins but there is no way he could be a solution in the ruck.

One idea to toss around is for Jako to swap with Troy Wilson. He's played a few games at CHB in the WAFL for East Perth and is a lot faster than Jako. What do you guys think of this idea?

As soon as I saw this topic my first thought was move him to the forward line, and give Wilson in the backline, so GoEagles I agree, it could be an idea.
Jako was SO beaten on Sunday, although weren't they all.... :( , that I reckon he'll be asking for a move himself...
Playing him in the ruck, I don't think is a viable option.
I don't think he is 'tradable' at this point in his career and nor do I think we should contemplate it. Let him make the decision himself - if he's not playing near his top level by the end of the season, his pride will make the decision and he'll retire (if not entirely by his choice, then maybe with a gentle push). I think allowing him to 'retire' is the only fitting way the club can thank him for his years of service & dedication to the club.

jacko in the early nineties was an athelete, his girth was much smaller, well build legs but not huge like now, i dont think the knees affect his pace, its more his bulk, if he can loose most of it, and get some fitness he will be fast and strong enough to hold down CHB for 2 more yeras, utill hes 30, otherwise retire.

LOL
are you serious
Take wilson out of your forward line and you loose your only target.
Your club is strugglying with few key position players ready to step up for macintosh, jacko and those types.

I still laugh when I remember it was only like last year or the year before you put this guy on the big bucks.
I said it back then and I say it now, Jacko is the biggest waste of a millions dollars going round.
Hird could play 3 games and Jacko play a whole season and hird would still be more valuable.

Such a ******** team we are and yet we stand 2 wins above the all mighty Freo.

Go back to where you came from Sabre!!!

Back to the Jako topic, he has to be moved out of defence. We can no longer rely on him to go with his man, but he still possesses skills few players on our list can match. So the only solution is a move to the forward line.

Guys,

I would have to agree that Jako should be sent forward. He doesnt have the pace anymore but he does still have the strength. He has killed Carey in the past because he is great one on one.

I think Judgey should put him at CHF and try to get him one out with his opponent. Then he can either outmark them or at least bring it to the ground for our crumbing half forwards like Kerr, Fletcher, Brauny maybe even Wirra or Phil. He wont be able to chase much so thats why we need the crumbers.

I realise that everyone who posts here has the interests of the mighty Eagles at heart (except the dorkers supporters), but some of you seem to have short memories. Jako is one of our greatest players and a KEY component of our successes. Remember that he won 3 Club Champs awards in a row back in 93-94-95 when we were at our peak. He is a legend of the club and should never be traded! Trading people like big Jak is like selling out the soul of the club - similar to getting rid of Woosha, Bluey, Mainy, Kempy. You just cant do that. (I reckon we should have never trade Mitch White either).

The guy has earnt a break from the supporters BUT he also needs some help from Judgey....He is too slow for CHB now except for similar type players (Loewe). I also am sad to say I think it will be his last season but he should be left at CHF, maybe a flank for 4-5 weeks. Try some young fellas in the backline.

Sorry to post a novel guys - we all realise its a long way back up to the top but as I told a scumbag western bulldags supporter today, I'll never give up on the Eagles!!!!!

GO EAGLES - top eight 2002, top 4 2003!!!!! 2004 on - glory again!

Sabre,
You're taling about a two flag ten finals series player. Something the scum down at Freo has never had. So take your ********e back to the Freo board and use it on the crap you call players. 0-7

Frodo I you have a look im not knocking jacko im sticking up for him.
Its you eagle supporters calling for his head

Get your facts straight next time!

Well first thing i have to say is that a few of you said to trade Jako.....i am bitterly disappointed in the people who even thought of that. Glen Jakovich is one the greatest CHB's of all time and one of the greatest servants of our club in our short history.

I dont believe that any player who has ever played for the WCE have had as much passion for this club as he has in his heart. And he knows and we know that he is having a tough time this year but in no way is this the end of Jakovich.

He has way to much pride to be beaten like this every week and i fully expect him to come back and play some great footy, perhaps not at CHB but up forward. I see no reason not to play him at CHF as we desperately need someone to step up in that area and he could be that man.

He is not as quick as he used to be so he wont exactly be a leading target but Jako could probably outmuscle most men in the AFL and he can take a good grab. At the very least he will provide a contest and lure a top rate backmen to play on him.

When coming out of defence you need to be very precise with your disposal for if you dont hit your target then it will come back at you quicker than you can say turnover. Jakovich has great disposal and hardly misses a target. Now all he has to do is instead of kicking towards players, kick it between two big sticks.

Its all mental now and im sure he would revel in the chance to play up forward as he knows that his speed isnt up to scratch.
So there will be no trading no panic buttons and certainly no retiring, Jako has too much talent too much heart and too much passion to go out like this.

We all know he has skills, the only thing he has lost is his speed, Lockett kicked more goals than anyone ever and a baby can crawl faster than Lockett could run. So put him forward and watch him work. And for gods sake give the man a chance, at least he deserves that, i mean he only has 2 premeirships and 4 club champion awards!!!

Cmon Jako i know you can do it.

Frodo im not knocking the player.
But he should have never been put on such a big contract back then.
Sure maybe before his knee reconstruction he was a million dollar player.
But he certainly aint in the catergory now.

Its your own supporters knocking the player frodo not me.
So maybe you should GET STUFFED

Jakovich is sadly on the one way street to retiring, no turning back, he has gone too far down the road. Same with Milli and Kempy.

I thought Jak should have been moved forward before the last quarter, he looked OK up there adding a bit of muscle. He's way too slow for defence at the moment, that's for damn sure

As for Kemp - the concussion is a worry (time for a Narkle skid lid?) but when he was out there he really stood up. I'd like to see him play on
