What value a premiership?

This is for a formula I am working on.

If one home and away win is worth 1, then how much should a premiership be worth?

Without further information I'm not sure how anyone can give a reasonable answer to this one.

From the options given, I'd rather win 1 premiership than win 160 games without one of those wins being a premiership, so ill go with the 160 option.

Ok, some further information.

I'm trying to perfect a formula that will provide the best team of the "Port Adelaide Era", that is 1997-2010.

I'm not interested in putting them in order of premierships won, because that is simple and no fun. So I'm trying to discern what the appropriate weighting for finals appearances and places are, and that is why the premiership options are multiples of 16. Basically, this is the final piece of the puzzle. And I wanted to know what the general feeling is in "Big Footy World".

So, if one home and away win is worth 1 point, how much should a premiership be worth?

I know that Premierships are what we crave as supporters, but if you're trying to do an objective analysis 16 games won puts a team in the top 4 and is a very good season. The upper limits are just absurd, 160 games is 7 perfect H&A seasons, one premiership win outweighing that is ridiculous.

well 25 wins is a perfect season so I would say it would be worth that. everyone will have a different number though, it can't be correctly valued as everyone values it differently

That's an illogical proposition though, because you can't win a premiership by winning one game in a season - Logic suggests that you need to win 14+ regular season games and then 3 finals, so the premiership is really 17+ wins.

I've always felt that too much is tied up in the bottom line of "premierships won" - Your team being competitive every year and giving you a reason to go to the footy every week gives you a lot more enjoyment than just winning a flag and then becoming an embarrassment until your next good team comes about.

Collingwood has declared an operating profit of $5.389 mil.
Its bedfellow in the Grand Finals, & eventual loser the Saints posted a $1.7m operating profit.

Is it unfair to compare the powerhouse Collingwood with one of the div2 Melbourne clubs?

Cellar dwellers West Coast declared an operating profit of $4.8 m.

A premiership, including a GF replay looks to produce a bit less than $600k .. too cynical?

Remember folks, for the formula to work, a premiership must have a value, so despite all the wonderful "priceless" stuff, it's not within the parameters of the question.

8 teams win a game per week. In a 22 round system (which was the system for most? of 1997-2010), that equates to 176 home and away wins per year.

Only one grand final is won per year, obviously.

So 1 premiership is awarded for every 176 home and away wins.

The value of 176 seems like a good estimate?

Again though, that doesn't make sense, because you don't only win one game when you win a premiership - It comes on the back of winning 15-20 games, generally.

You also can't win the games you don't compete in, so the 176 number features a lot of irrelevant games.
