Besides, this gives me hope...

And while I'm here might as well say how impressed I was with Webster's game. To come in as the sub and not be phased by anything speaks volumes. How good was his bullet pass with his first possession if you don't mind. Going to be an elite kick, I think like Wright he'll learn his trade at half back then eventually move into the midfield or a wing.

We could have a seriously quick midfield in the future. Best thing about that though is they also don't mind winning their own ball. Carlton's mids are quick but they don't like getting the ball first, we're going to combine speed with ball winning ability. Steven, Wright, Saunders, Murdoch, Webster, Newnes all running through there with maybe Ledger and Curren as well complimented by Ross and Armitage is something I really, really like the look of.

It's all so gosh darn exciting!! :D

It's going to be a hell of a ride for the next 2 years...........a real rollercoaster me thinks.......as these kids find their feet and progress into decent, good, or elite players!

There are still a number whom we have yet to see this season, Ledger, Curren, Markworth, Dunell to name but a few.

Agreed. The desperate spoil on Hampson in a one-on-one on the lead in the third quarter (I think) exhibited why he should stay there at FB. He has the crazy pace to not be beaten on the lead by quicker FFs, but the height (and leap) to challenge the gorillas once he fills out properly and learns the craft better.

I think it was Richo who mentioned after that spoil, that Stanley's pace for a big lad made him worthwhile persisting with down back and that once he learnt to use his body he'd be quite handy.

The point by Ian Dunross re McEvoy and needing 4-5 preseasons shouldn't be lost. Big guys, by and large, take longer to mature physically. Macca has only really done so lately, and Rhys is nearly 18 months younger than Ben, and hasn't had the relative luxury of being settled into the one position.

Also hasn't had a settled line up or consistent experienced team-mates around him all year. Will get better. And if he moves forward in years to come, will be better for the experience.
Agree. Just watched the replay again and it was by and large a perfectly fine game by Rhys. As I said earlier, they weren't giving Hampson the bronx cheers when he finally took a couple of marks because he was teaching Rhys a lesson!

He only got beaten in about 3 marking contests all night (which he ought to learn from- no-one's suggesting he's even close to the finished product back there yet), made some good spoils in others (including ones where he was helping out others), went back hard with the flight of the ball a couple of times, fought hard for it at ground level well, did some good chasing and his kicking was good all night long, with some good short passes and also some more of his good 50-55m passes out of the backline (including from kick-ins) that hit their targets.

After being demoralised the week before, hopefully that game will have stabilised his confidence again, so that he can start building it again from this week.

Carlton are cactus for the year. Just not enough tackling. They can run, and when they do, can get results. But, a lot of our players got above average stats were because Carlton's players - when without the ball, are basically shit.

I am probably going to get slaughtered for saying this but I thought McEvoy got toweled up by Warnock all night and it nearly cost us the game along with the lack of players at centre bounces. Otherwise a masterful game from McEvoy but thank goodness we had Hickey to give him a chop out and also give us flexibility.

It depends what you mean by toweled up. McEvoy is not a great tap ruckman. He often loses the hitouts and hitouts to advantage, but more then makes up for this by his all round game. There is no way Warnock was better on the night, but in the tap work only, yes Warnock toweled him up.

This is where Hickey may be really good for us, togeather lets hope they are a flag winning ruck combo.

Yeah - I agree. McEvoy has been superb and does more than enough to offset his downside. I was more annoyed with the coaching staff for taking too long to swap Hickey into the middle who clearly jumps higher than McEvoy. At the end of the day there is not much you can do about a bloke who is 7 foot tall!! Our mids probably made it look worse by not reading the play. I like Hickey in the team and I am happy to wear his errors as he learns the game because structurally it makes McEvoy a better player.

And right now, Hickey makes ROO a better player. Much like Kosi, having Hickey there draws an opponent, so they can't double-team Riewoldt. It's been amazing how free Roo has been this year.

Reiwoldt, has not been double teamed nearly as much as last year. maybe other teams thought he wasn't as good this year.

Which may be a reason to get a 2 tall, 1 ruck/forward, and a medium tall structure down there:

HF: Milne, Riewoldt, Hickey (& ruck)
FF: Saad, Maister, Sippos
Int: Milera (& outmid), Curren (& inmid)

That way, we have at least 2 talls all the time, and sometimes 3, with Sippos making life hell down there with his marking as well.

Certainly for Etihad games, I like that structure. There is tons of versatility, with Curren and Milera to add to the mix when necessary as well.

Swap Hickey and Siposs and I like it too.

Probably should've saved my last post for this thread. :p

Anyway that's probably a bit too top heavy for mine. I think it's either a medium or a third tall, don't think there's room for both because we need to play as many mids as possible. That's why I like the three tall setup with one relieving Macca, because when that happens we still have two big key marking options in the forward line.
