Our execution of all the basic skills was appalling. We even had enough chances to win it within the last 5 minutes.
I think the bye hurt us. We were getting better with every game. We lost our touch.

Yeah but they use the ball better than what we do when going forward. As long as we butcher the thing, we may need a permanent small forward who can mop up.
isn't thats what Jamie Elliott should do? Agree, keep running him on the ball weakens our attack on the forward line.

The problem is that if you leave him up forward, he may find it hard to transition onto the ball later on. I guess the thinking is that you need as many who can go through the guts as possible but it's hurting us a bit atm.
The other problem is that if the small forwards push up the ground for numbers sake around the contest, they are getting lost on the way back.

Sydney and Hawthorn (now with Rioli playing up the ground) seem to get by without one

Ill give you Sydney.

Hawthorn have Breust and Rioli, even Puopolo to an extent.

Since Krakouers gone we dont have a genuine goal sneak, Elliot is more a lead up forward similar to what Medders was.

The greater intensity of Adelaide's players was everything. They managed to break up a lot of thrusts through the middle through desperation. If those had broken through, we would probably have won.
A subsidiary but related problem was the crucial dropped marks from clean forward passes. (3 of them). They should have been goals.
The crowd bore down on the kickers to the extent that even Elliott did not look like kicking his only set shot at goal.
The narrow ground helped them apply the strangulation that overwhelmed us.
Despite all of this, we did not lose by much. The defense held out most thrusts, and there were plenty. This was a loss, but nothing like a disaster. I don't believe that it is much of an indicator of our year's prospects. Everything is still there to play for.

Yes, I agree, but somehow we need to structure it so that we can give a forward freedom to attack the goals.

You're right but you and I have no idea what the coaching staff are thinking in this respect. As I said in an earlier post, in their efforts to create space and help out the mids froward of centre, the get lost on the way back. The numbers around contests is nuts (for many sides) and so it's either a bomb forward to all the runners to attack the goals or rely on the spread to break the fifty and kick a goal. Obviously we didn't do either that well on Thursday night.
