One player is still playing for essodon from these two year's drafts.. including the 2001 'super draft' What went wrong here?

2001
18 Shane Harvey
31 Joel Reynolds
34 Simon O'Keefe
47 Andrew Welsh
64 Daniel McAlister

2000
17 James Davies
27 Ted Richards
32 Sam Hunt
47 Jordan Bannister
63 Marc Bullen
74 Michael Davis

alot of those players were flashy which means that at an under 18 level you would say that they were talented, thus why they were drafted unfortuantely they didn't deliver

Essendon only 2 top 30 picks in those 2 years. Even in the 2001 draft there wasn't to many players who came from outside the top 30 who have become very good players. 5 of them are still on AFL lists, one of them quit football. They also had Pev and Cory McGrath as rookie elev in that period.

Sure, now those pick look bad, but lets put it into perspective. In 2000, when we could have picked Charman and McPhee, did we really think we needed another ruckman and tall defender? NO!

And who was to know that JJ and Pev were going to drop off the pace at 28-29 rather than 32-33? NO ONE! Sure we could have used Kerr and Mitchell, but who was to know just how good they were going to bee.

Thats the beauty of the draft. It makes some people look like geniuses, while others look like dooshbags.

I agree. It just makes you feel terrible thinking you could've had all those players lol.

Ted Richards was alright but only to be traded. So we did something there

Ted has shown this year how effective he has been when the Swans are not playing well . He isnt. Just another average player.

Dempsey for Richards- I hope the young bloke gets over these persistent injuries so the Dons definitely end up ahead.-

Looking on the brightside.. 2006 :thumbsu:

2 Scott Gumbleton
18 Leroy Jetta
20 Tom Hislop
36 Alwyn Davey (how did he not get picked up before this)
42 Bachar Houli
47 Kyle Reimers

Our player development manager was david flood, that could be part of the problem with that era, our recruiting was ordinary to say the best.

This problem has been alleviated over the last couple of drafts when we have had decent numbered picks so the trend has hopefully stopped.

People talk about bad drafting and pick at Kerr draft etc. What about Bolton at No 4 and Goodes miles away?????
