Maybe the playing group was a bit like some fans, expecting to just "turn it on" when the regular season started?
Spot on!!

We looked like a pack of bears that had just come out of our winter hibernation...No run, No backing up, No blocking for our ball carriers, No spread, Virtually no effective tackling, No fast ball movement. Too many absolute passengers on the night, a lot of very lazy footballers out there in Crows colours last night.

Someone should hypnotize them into thinking the games a final each week. They seriously did this all last year, played one quarter and depending who, it was often enough.

The funny thing is we played like shit but if we kicked straight we win
That's a good sign but I don't understand why we are so shit at tackling. It's more than just technique, it's attitude. We should be smashing our opponents every opportunity we have. For those guys who had 2 tackles or less I would have flogged them every training session this week. They've got an extra week to recover and they have to understand there are consequences.

I loved watching the Tigers tackle last night. Constantly got on arm around the hips and then held the other wrist/forearm perfectly to stop a handball. Obviously been a focus of their training.

Why is it we've been so shit at it for so long???

It's amazing isn't it? I'm sure I read that Nick Polous was our tackling coach last year as well as this year. The only thing we've done different is we had a guru come in for a day. We've also heard how its been a focus all preseason and yet we produced that crap. Except for half a dozen players the rest obviously didn't come in with a mindset that tackling was going to be a key part of our game. That's inexcusable and they better pull there finger out next week otherwise it will be 0-2.

In the face of all the rhetoric I reckon you have something here.

It won't be solved until players get dropped for missing tackles.

It would make quite a statement if Douglas, Mackay and Porplyzia were all dropped, given that they had the most visible missed tackles against Essendon. Although to be fair, Dougie's was more a squib than a missed tackle.

I agree but, there were worse than Mackay. Plenty of players only had one including Jaensch, VB, Henderson and Vince all of whom should have had more.

We might not be able to field a full side

Weak administration.

We're weak at the top, so we're weak on the ground. Culture.

This is reflected in our record in big games also. We lose whenever we need to make a statement; for whatever reason, we don't have that intangible fight and spirit that the successful clubs have. We lost to Sydney in the qualifying final last year, at home, with our best kit on the park. That was a big game, a hell of a lot to play for, on the big stage, a serious look at a grand final. A serious look. That was a game that could shape our history. Once we had lost, it was an uphill battle to make anything happen and the -opportunity- was perceived to have been lost. We beat Fremantle, as we should have, and went into an "unwinnable" preliminary final. The perfect Adelaide scenario. This club only wins games of football when the expectation to do so isn't there. No surprise we put in our best effort of the year in that one. Though we still lost.

Tackling falls into an intangible mindset category. Every football club says it is an attitude. It is culture. Ours is weak, so our tackling is weak.

Lack of pressure and desperation around the ball, tackling again a big issue, were shaky all over the ground but our defense particularly worries me, teams still scoring too easily once they get forward of centre. The forwards weren't great BUT they weren't getting the support they needed from the midfield either.

Still, it's too early to start panicking and making silly changes to the side, the players always responded following a loss last year so lets see if the boys can get the fire back before next week. Hopefully the coaches can be a bit more proactive, seemed quite unresponsive in changing it up against Essendon last week.

I really think some of our players don't like to get dirty. Still stuck in the clean precise footy mode.
Absolutely agree ......so why the call to drop Petrenko who is one player that does get down & dirty

Because he can not do the rest.

Anyone can be taught to do the dirty work or to play a junk yard role because in any sport, defensive s 90% inspiration and 10% technique. Where as its only possible to teach a player with offensive skills and football ability how to play a skilful game. Petrenko will never be a highly skilled player. Thats why he needs to be dropped as its easier to find a talented offensive player who can be taught to do the dirty work.

But that's what the team is full of atm, talented players that don't want to do the hard work. We don't have in the team anymore the Doughty's, McGregors, and Shirley's of this world. Petrenko is nearly the lone hand in that respect.

Bloody hell, get a grip.

It was one game. Is it the end of the world for West Coast? They lost, Hawthorn/Geelong tomorrow. One will lose.

If we lose next week and then the showdown, you have a right to ask that tough question. But after one loss against a quality team, lets just wait and see.

Tell that to the Melbourne football club

Lets see how we respond next week against a hapless Brisbane that got belted in Round 1. Its certainly not a good situation to be in and I am worried we'll take them way too softly.

I'm not.

We will get up for this game and then the showdown. Win those 2 and season is on track.
