I think Malcolm Turnbull has the right idea to be honest - this is yet another irresponsible move by the Rudd Government and the cash handout won't make one iota of difference. I believe the opposition want some time to thoroughly look over the policy - the handout component is probably what is the worst part of it. Didn't work that well last time, won't work again this time.

The government is in a panic and are making all the wrong moves - Andrew Hilditch and the selectors would do a better job managing the economy than the present government.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing $950 for a PS3 or throw it on the stock market.

Can't wait to see new Hollowmen when it comes back on, especially about the handouts :D

**** you Malcolm Turnbull! It's quite interesting that it's very much a 50/50 split as to the support for the Opposition's move to block the stimulus.

Yeah **** you for trying to stop a ridiculous hand out and pushing us 12 billion further into debt without anything to show for it.

What an idiot ...our kids paying the interest on 12 billion dollars for the next decade so half the population can buy laptops, have a holiday or pay off some of their credit cards.

i think its pritty stiff on those uni students, who dont qualify for youth allowance.. i personally am at uni and do have a part time job.. so i am eligible.. although im not eligible for youth allowance due to family earnings.. i still think majority of university students who only can work under 20 hours are getting robbed considering books can be 400 or so a semester, and you dont as a 21 year old who is working want to ask your parents for money .. for the record ill be using my handout on a PNO cruise =)

Stiff on Uni Students??? The world owes Uni Students nothing. Everyone is already sick to death of their 'poor me' rants. The majority put in bugger all and whine the most for handouts. As one former PM once said 'Go and get a job'. If it doesn't give enough hours then get another :D:D:D My two cents

Yeah, you're right, we should make it as difficult as we can for uni students. That way they'll drop out and we'll be able to fly our engineers and doctors in from overseas and pay them three times what they're worth while still not having enough doctors and engineers.

i never said the world owes us anything but we do make a decent contribution to society, doctors etc .. with the economy the way it is at the moment,it isnt as easy as you make out to go and get two jobs. Not many employers are going to hire someone who has uni 3-4 days a week, let alone find 2 jobs, that will fit into ur university schedule and other emlpoymers schedule. I personally am fine with the money i am earning so am not complaining but for example i have a sibling who still lives at home and earns 75k a year, now tell me a uni student earning 200 a week whilst studying wouldnt benefit more from the 950 than a single living at home earning 75k

Krudd is hoping that with the $900, people will go out and spend up
Who's more likely to go spend the $900? A uni student earning $200 a week or someone earning $75k living at home?

I'm guessing you would plan on either saving it or spending it in drips and drabs.

My main options are to pay down debt or buy shares. I'm considering buying a new laptop, though I doubt it's a wise option.

I don't think someone earning 75K deserves to get the handout.

Joe Average apparently earns $60k a year according to the govt., and that same govt. is going to give him $950.

So Joe earns $60,000 per year exactly and pays $12,000 in income tax, plus an additional $900 for medicare. He doesn't have a HECS debt otherwise he'd be paying an additional 6% ($3600) and still paying income tax on $60k!

A tiny increase of 2.5% to the 30% tax bracket would cost Joe an extra $650 a year.

Approximately 11,000,000 Australians are employed, 80% of them paying tax at the same rate as Joe. That's $5.7bn in additional revenue, assuming that number of employed persons doesn't fall and salaries hold.

Assuming the govt. borrowed its $40bn at 5%, the interest payable will be $2bn per year until the balance reduces. At $5.7bn per year, the loan would be paid back within 8 or 9 years.

8 years x $650 a year is $5200.

I wonder if Joe was offered the chance to choose between $900 in the hand now and a $650 tax rebate every year for the next decade which one he'd choose...
