The Suns officially started in 2011 and haven't had the best run of it since then with bad coach choices, bad captain choices, bad code swapping player choices and just all round a pretty terribly run club. The giants have shown them the blueprint of how to run a successful start up club and the Lions have shown them how to be successful in Queensland.

What year do you think they will finally crack the top 8?

All better than GC so it would be a miracle if they made finals in 2025

Got a feeling Dimma is going to work his magic in 2025 and take the club to its first finals appearance now that he's started to mould the list the way he wants it, as opposed to inheriting a list 12 months ago that he didn't have enough time/information to shape. An example is getting rid of Lukosius because he presumably didn't think he suited his game style and bringing in Rioli who he knows does suit his game style.

You could already see signs of what's to come last year when the home record improved dramatically and had it not been for a mental crux on the road as well as being committed to playing the kids (e.g. continually selecting an underperforming 18yo Walter over a decently performing Day/Casboult), then Dimma very likely would have taken the club to the finals in his first season as coach.

Having said that, I have been fooled before so I'll never be super confident until it happens.

The Gold Coast Suns with the list they have now should be playing finals in 2025, but the problem is that 12 of the 18 teams all are realistic finals prospects this year. Obviously not all of them can make it into the Top 8 for simple mathematical reasons - but Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, Gold Coast, GWS, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs are all in the position to make finals, the expectation is that they should make the finals and nobody would be surprised to see them playing in September.

Of the other six teams three of them - Fremantle, Essendon and St Kilda - could make the finals if things go their way and not so well for opposing clubs but are more likely than not to miss September action. The remaining three teams - West Coast, Richmond and North Melbourne - won't make the finals.

So in theory, the Suns could have their best season to date in 2025, yet still end up outside the Top 8 due to there being so many other finals contenders this season.

The thing going for The Suns their top inside midfielders are 23 who are statistically handling the biggest disposal/clearance workload, some other clubs like Adelaide have it where their aged soon to be retiring players are statistically doing all the hard lifting inside midfield, yet, people keep hyping them up. It only works with an aged list if they're getting results, which they're not. Gold Coast doing good rebuilding their midfield instead of treading water.

If they can win there home games and 2 or 3 away games yes they play finals.
That's essentially what happened last year. We fell at the final hurdle losing our last two home games. Had we won those last two home games, then we would have finished the year with 13 wins and it would have come down to percentage as to whether we play finals or Carlton did.

Hoping for several early away wins this year so we're not so reliant on defending home court this time around. Three of our first four away games this year are against West Coast, North and Richmond so I'd like to think we'll win at least two of those games. Having said that, supporting the Suns has repeatedly taught me that you can never count your chickens before they hatch.
