I can not recall the last time the premiers of the prevoius year lost in round 1.

Do we have any stats on this.

It is rare they lose round 1 the following season.

Don't think there'd be any stats on it, wins and losses are a bit obscure.

In terms of our best 22, we need 2 good key forwards. That's a clear weakness so there's a lot of pressure on Van Rooyen and Jefferson to fulfil this hole in the future.

Other than that i'd say:
-if Kozzie Pickett goes we'll need a small forward.

• Ruckman (life after gawn/grundy)
• speedy medium defender.
• midfielders for life after Oliver/Petracca.

Just checked Collingwood played Footscray in round 1 in 1991 and the Pies won wow the match by 70 points at the MCG.

Round 1 2019 west coast lost to lions by 40 points at the gabba

Port won the flag in 2004. Strangely they didn't have a home game in the opening round of the season.

They faced Freo in WA in round 1 2005 and lost by 30-35 points.

Graham Polak did an ok job on Warren Tredrea. Polak held Tredrea to goal less but he had 20 disposals

For me Collingwood just need 2-3 A graders and like a specialist CHB and CHF.

Along with a full time ruck man.

We have these 3 we win the flag but in 2023 we dont have so it will have to 2024 in order to get.

Still dont have a forward spearhead and dont have a trusty CHB.

In hindsight Pies should have kept grundy just thinking this will cost us a top 4 spot.

or even a top 8.

We need 3 A Graders CHB,CHF and a ruckman. Then we are all set.

I think we need an electrifying fast mid more than anything, our defence is solid and I reckon our forward line is as well, I don’t think we have the most talented list by any means but we’re an even team with balls and I think our balance is getting close, we’ll be playing finals this year IMO, who knows what happens from there.

Gold medal for this one has to be Collingwood 1990.

Was a 15 year handover for mine.

Even tho we made the GF in 2002 and 2003 we lost it and always looked back to 1990.

Ill say 2010 took some of that hang over feel out of it.

But again come 2014 the hang over time started again but we had 2010 along as well.

But for the longest celebrated it is 1990 by far.

Ill say Collingwoods in my life time was the time when Tony Shaw took over as coach look i really liked Shaw and Buckley but they just can not coach.

So Ill say the time 1996 say till 1999 was terrible was 4 years of crap.

But the worst and far and away the crappist was 2012-2020 Buckley was coach.

2018 just masked the crap we were in thats all. Longmure was coaching us that year any way he was calling the shots.

So 9 years of wasted years 2012-2020 never got ahead and we were a swamp.

i liked 2021 time to bottom out and sort our selfs out.

Ill say Eddie should have stepped down as president in 2011 when we lost the 2011 GF.

We would have never had Buckley as well.

Was hoping we had a set up that is similar to todays set up at Collingwood coming into 2012.

Gosh had we doen that we would have won 2 flags by now.

Anyhow you can not change history.

Collingwood are on the road to glory and just feel they are a season or 2 away from a flag.

Ill say 2024,2025 we will be in that sweet spot

2023 is the we are getting there kind of year.

2018 was the exception of Buckley’s coaching tenure not the rule, even then it came from enormous help from Longmuir, an incredible easy draw where we beat only one too 8 team yet still made the top 4 and luck in the prelim were tigers players were ill. Even the closeness of the grandfinal flattered that year Westcoast beat us convincingly twice before and aside from the 1st quarter were in control of the game.

The prelim against GWS the next year is a better indicator of the quality of coach Buckley was.

The Mick Malthouse/Nathan Buckley "succesion plan" fiasco though ruined your chances of having a premiership dynasty. Bucks did a fine job dismantling a premiership winning team.
