The point is, Back in 2011 and 2012 the 16 minute quarters would of helped Gold coast and GWS the most when they regualrly fielded 1st year players.

Point is I didnt mind the 15-16 minute quarters, there wasnt too many 100 point beltings.
The problem is if 15-16 minute quarters + time on I assume were introduced in the league now, it would be an unbelievable achievement for a team to SCORE 100 points in a match compared to now, let alone beating a team by 100 points. Instead it will just be teams scoring 2-3 goals each quarter before parking the bus again and going ultra-defensive for 5 minutes before the quarter finishes, resulting in a (60-40) match most times with the odd high scoring match of (90-70) and low scoring match of (40-30) in between.

Surely I wasn't the only one to think it just felt like with the shorter quarters that I seriously felt like I was watching Under 16s play last year with the scores and playing style being dished up by most of the clubs and it was honestly like I was watching a completely different sport to one I knew.

Like I said before, if the AFL really wanted to quicken the games up without removing the fabric of the game, there are so many things that could be done like quicken up the score review process, eliminate ruck nominations & shortening goal & quarter breaks just to name a few.

Instead, what will we see is that the AFL will care more about the money side of things in allowing more ads in games (during reviews, after goals, quarter breaks) at the expense of destroying the fabric of the sport from what we loved as spectators in shorting quarters in the future to something so unlike the sport has seen before (15-18 minutes + time on) cause it's already taking place with the amount of fake agenda news from people involved in the media & AFL and it will just get louder and louder until they finally get their way, which makes me sick to the core

By the way.... I am glad you are a South Adelaide fan. So am I and I hope they make the SANFL finals again this season.
Haha nice to meet someone who follows the Mighty Panthers on here, hoping this year is the year for us given the squad we have at our disposal although I wouldn't want to jinx it as it has been 57 years since we have won it ;)

Scores were way down last season even accounting for the shorter quarters. It seemed like teams were more conservative and happy to sit on leads. It was awful and definitely the least I've enjoyed a football season despite it being played at a time where there wasn't much else to enjoy.

We all have opinions. Mine is as good as yours and as good as Mr. Whateley's. I would like 100 rotations again but who cares about my opinion ...

My first live game this season yesterday at the G & it became really obvious where the time problems lie (not that we don't already know) with everyone standing around scratching their balls after goals waiting to restart - I think the estimate was that the increase in that break over recent years add about 12 minutes to yesterdays game.

& then there's the goal reviews with easily a few minutes wasted going over & over replays trying to see things that aren't there - have a quick look & if it's not obvious, revert to the umpires call, stop with the ******* about.

Just addressing those 2 areas solves most of the game length issues that some are whinging about.

The only recent rules change I've agreed with is the reduced interchange cap. Love seeing both sides out on their feet late in the game. The team that can find something in the tank wins the tight games. So I guess that means shorter Q's, right? :(

Feels like we're chasing our tails. AFL reduce interchange to enforce fatigue and create a more open game. Game opens up, media celebrate. Then players start getting injured and the coaches and media cry that the players are too fatigued and getting injured, argue the game needs to be shorter.

Emphasis is more on commercialisation than custodianship.
Hit the nail on the coffin there, mate.

The AFLHQ pretty much cares more about the financial side and benefits surronding that of the professional sporting business then the fabric of the sport itself and that, in my eyes, is a f****** joke in everyone's eyes as a spectator watching the game :(

Like I said before, shorter quarters will happen in the future with the AFL squeezing in more ads as humanly possible cause the AFL care about the top dollar and that's it.

How is some of the general public not angry at this is unbelievable IMO and this should never happen in the first place if it was up to me

whats with geelong types constantly trying to change the rules?

whately constantly campaigning for changes, steve hocking increasing the pace of significant rules changes, the clubs leaders (scott, dangerflog, selwood) constantly whining about the rules and proposing constant changes (some quite stupid).

Joel Selwood: "Game is too long."

Also Joel Selwood: "AFL should add a captains challenge."

Fmd.
What do the other 17 captains think? I have no idea but I'm almost certain that if they're happy with the status quo that doesn't get reported anywhere.

One of the great and most common misconceptions. Eliminating the ruck nominations would simply reintroduce the trend that seeped in prior to this nomination rule - mass-scale blocking at ruck contests and subsequent semi-random plucking out of free kicks to players who were not even ruckmen. How quickly we forget.

Yeah, I don't mind Selwood and Chris Scott but the whole argument that it runs players out of the game at 30 is self serving to the extreme.

I'll back in our gut runners like Ed Curnow now and Sam Walsh in 10 years to shoot this down.

So endurance athletes get a look in for a career and not just the burst athletes who loved the unlimited interchange.

Gives all types a chance to shine.

Geelong are one of the oldest teams of all time. They seem to do okay

Apart from cricket are there any sports actually trying to reduce playing time? Soccer isn't, none of the American sports are.
Actually, the length of the game is a huge issue in baseball. But in that case, it's well founded; the average length of a game was something like 2:30 in the 70's but it's well over 3 hours now. And the post- season games are ridiculous, averaging almost 4 hours. The new Commissioner of Baseball, Rob Manfred, has implemented some major rule changes to try and combat this.

Lol, you’d have closer games if you had 5 minute quarters as well.

I think we have a greater percentage of players who get to 200 games than ever before.

Conditioning has kept improving over time as well, what Geelong players have fallen off a cliff at 30 anyway? They seem to have been very good at getting guys go until at least 33-35.

But they haven't reduced the playing time to 7 innings. NBA had reduced some timeouts to decrease their game length

None of them are actually trying to reduce playing time

The Essendon v Carlton game on Sunday was my first attended in 2 years. Being at the game showed you first-hand just how much dead time there is:

- too long a break between a goal and the restart (a huge factor in such a high-scoring match.
- a number of recalled bounces (I'm looking at you Razor)
- wayyy too much time looking at inconclusive footage for a score review.

Reduce the 'ad' time after goals, have a bounce only to start each quarter and back the umpire's call more when footage isn't helping.

No need to eat into playing time.
