Gustavo Kuerten was one of those players who went downhill very quickly. Three French Opens, 5 Masters Series and one Masters Cup before the age of 25, then nothing afterwards. His best subsequent slam performance was a solitary QF appearance at the FO.

All in all he won 16 titles in the first 5 years of his career, and 4 titles in the last 7.
 
Magnus Norman was someone I always thought should have had a better career. In 2000 he was 24, ranked #2, had won about 10 titles in the last 2 years and made the final of the FO and the semis at the AO. Four years later he was retired without winning another tournament.

Marcelo Rios and Tommy Haas are two players who I think were too good not to win a single slam between them.

Would you bloody go and do some research before you post absolute bullshit? He had a wrist injury last year which he retired form in the Aus Open, and it put him out for the year.

Also in regards to Wickmayer she made 4R at last year's AO and lost to Henin in a tough match.

And with Baghdatis he made a Wimby SF (as mentioned in another thread).

Definitely had the game to win multiple Slams.

Haas was unlucky, troubled most of the top players in his prime.
 
It's partly due to the rankings system. She shot up the rankings system in 08/09, but due to a back injury and form wasn't able to defend many of those points last year.

Remember when he was ranked about 5 in the world and had only ever made one GS QF?
He's a flog anyway, he actually had an argument with Pam Shriver (who was commentating) whilst he was playing a match. Pam Shriver is apparently a nut though so there were no winners in that argument.

Andrew Illie.

6-7 years ago the place to be was Margaret Court Arena at an Andrew Illie match. The guy was a loose cannon of the highest order, but he was probably the biggest shot maker the ATP tour has had in the last 30 years. It was very rare that the opponent had much say in who won, it was all down to what Illie was doing on the day. I saw him once run down a drop shot and then play an angled shot through his legs. When he took a set off of Agassi one Australian open he pulled down his shorts. Would love to see him in some legends matches.

The Romanian immigrant was a court 3 specialist! His array of uninhibited shots was exhilirating to watch at times! And made the australian open get a bit of character back in the day. He got his ranking to world number 55 or thereabouts, never higher and never lower back in the day, he was a real cult hero!

Ilie was a character when he donned the gypsy bandanna, contrary to what we see these days when channel 7 show all these token aussie wildcards lose by the end of the 4th day of the tournament


but yeh many high seeds met their waterloo against ilie on court 3!

He owned court 3! It was the day he played on centre court was the last we saw of him :(

^ I always remember him on Court 1 (or Margaret Court arena as it is known now)

Used to rip his shirt after each win. A quote from Agassi...

"You think you have him on the defense and it's like he has you right where he wants you," mused Agassi. "That's not easy to make a running, flying backhand up the line on your back foot, open stance, 25 feet down the baseline. That's too good."
