What's been your club's best 5 year period in history?

You are absolutely kidding yourself if you think the premiers don’t have everyone else in the league gunning for them the very next year.

It’s quite obviously one of the key reasons that clubs find it so hard to go back to back.

To an extent. But it's also overstated.

The bottom four clubs can gun for them, be as motivated as they like......but they're still the bottom four clubs. If you're the reigning premier - take Brisbane this season, they're 99.99% certain to smash the bottom 4 teams at the Gabba no matter how motivated they are. A shit team gunning for you is still a shit team.

Good teams get the luxury of being able to win games when not at their best or playing particularly well. Every game is not up for grabs.

Mr Meow I found it funny that both Jeremy Howe and Lachie Neale on AFL360 last night talked about how hard it is to back up a Premiership and go again, and that its something they aspire to be able to do.

Howe going into detail about how much he looks up to dynasty teams who were able to back it up consistently.

Maybe Lachie and Jeremy need to start monitoring the total wins, how celebrated their teammates are or the percentage column to really feel like they’ve achieved their goal instead.

Nothing like AAs to guarantee premiership success. And high rankings in Slobbo's top 50 players.

2017 - Adl 3, Ric 2
2018 - Ric 4, WCE 3
2019 - Gee, WCE 4, Ric 2
2020 - Gee, Port, WB, WCE 3, Ric 1

Did they specifically exclude Geelong as a 'dynasty team'?

And when Howe was talking about his aspirations for 'backing up a premiership', is the suggestion Collingwood will win the next two flags?

They don’t need to.

Back to back to back is the absolute of consistently “backing up”.

No, he was talking about the failure of last year, and how hard it was to back up.

Yeah, they’re just another fan-voted award, but the fans doing the voting are ex-players with bias and admin.

You tried to end this discussion a few times but clearly it's still on your mind. Glad I gave you something to think about. ;)

To be honest it's not something I thought you'd be that insecure about.

It's been a good chance to get the AA selection rants from you and others though. Having a less celebrated team is something I've noticed both Hawthorn and Richmond supporters have been annoyed about. It's always fun to have something in common with the Richmond maniacs (I guess?).

It was just really funny to hear it come from the mouths of actual AFL players about what back-to-back actually means… immediately reminded me of this thread.

But you can talk about celebrated players if that’s what you think players play for, I guess.

AAs once upon a time might have added a nice sheen. But it's become far too much a popularity contest now. Star players - those anointed by the media - get selected half the time no matter what their form. Then it's used as the defense against the poor selection in the first place.

To the original question, it couldn't be easier. In which 5 year period did your club win the most premierships? There's your answer.

For Geelong - it's 2007-2011. Very very easily. The 1951-52 teams might have been more dominant (relevant to the competition then etc.), but in any five year span you can come up with, they still won 2 flags. The 2007-2011 group won 3. It's as simple as that.

This is absolute rubbish.

I don't recall an AA player who didn't deserve it.

Sure, there are always a few on the fringe who might have been unlucky not to make it, but to suggest it is nothing more than a popularity contest is just plain false.

Cool, and hopefully in the future such topics won't make you blow a gasket. More wins, accolades, difficult opponents, tougher circumstances - more greatness.

Hawks with the three peat done at the comfort of your home ground against a series of forgettable, soft, interstate chokers.

We're both happy with our lot, so that's a win/win in my view.

I'm sure Strapping Young Lad would be able to rewrite history and give the '11-'15 Hawks twice as many All Australian selectees and twice as many total selections than the '07-'11 Cats (i.e a reverse UNO). If he wanted to. "I DON'T CARE DAMN IT, THE WHOLE THING IS RIGGED!" shows his apathy about the whole thing. Nobody has ever cared about an award a player won, and nobody ever will. ;)

I hope you watched last nights AFL360.

I know you won’t though, because I’ve already explained to you how it shatters your fantasy of back to back not being the pinnacle when you hear two premiership players taking about what it means to back it up.

I've got better things to do than watch 360.

No fantasy shattered for me. You've been the one thoroughly pissed off about every point I've made. I don't see any need to continue upsetting you.

That’s the equivalent of “u ma bro”, and we all know who’s really mad.

The irony of that reply is delicious. Please keep trying to project your irritation and insecurity onto me. It is quite amusing.

I look forward to further "I DON'T CARE!I DON'T CARE! YOUR STUPID ARGUMENTS HAVE NO EFFECT ON ME!" rambles.
I'm just glad to hear that Jeremy Howe expects Collingwood to win the next two flags, based on his alleged comments about 'striving to back up'...
