With all due respect to Wellsy and Spitta and any other evangelists in our side, the team resembles a choir group than a footy side.

The only exceptions are McDonald and Levi.

One has played 8 games, the other a fringe player.

Scott has made a concerted effort to draft players of 'exemplary character' and this is the result. Get done after a dismal showing against the Cats, and soon as the siren sounds, looks as though they are leaving a LifeHouse concert. No anger, no bitterness, no disappointment. Just high 5's and cuddles all round.
Agree with this. Too many soft introverted guys at north.
I hope we draft and trade in more extroverted players that have some mongrel

I reckon Taylor Garner being fit will redress the balance a bit. How far off is he? had a good swagger about him in his debut last yar.

I want our team leaders to stand up in Perth, no ifs, buts or bullshit.

Petrie- show some balls and instead of your pissweak 9.14 from in 17 games at subi, kick a bag.

Andrew Swallow does okay at Subi ( 8 goals in 13 games and 22 possessions (more goals than Petrie))- stand up again.

Boomer - make a statement.

Give us your best performance on the field...

Bit of an exaggeration? Has repeatedly put his more experienced teammates (McMahon, Mullett and Wright) to shame with his work rate and defensive nous.
Whilst there are heaps of reasons he will stay in the team.

He is a walk up start at the moment based purely on his willingness to contest.

The only negative I see in Luke is his kicking efficiency, can really shank it some times, and I mean grubbers along the ground type stuff.
He was poor early but turned it around in the second half, got more involved and showed fearlessness in the contest.
Thought he'd had some average games the two weeks before. Everybody looked good in the Brisbane game.
I think he'll be a ripper when he moves to midfield. He's not ready to be captain, but shows good traits.

Swallow, whilst a very good player, isn't a captain.
Unfortunately for us, there is no other stand out candidates.
Ziebell fitness and inside game is too much of a worry for him to also shoulder the responsibility of leading this young team. It would have been a big risk and who know, it could have been a gamble that paid of. But this club has been weak in previous years in sticking its neck out and chose the safe option.
Wells is in the mould of Swallow. Neither says much but leads by his actions. That sentence is the biggest load of crap and a big problem of why we are where were at today. For a young team a vocal leader is a must. When the chips are down you need some words of encouragement and when the heat is on you need some reassuring words. I honestly would not be against making Dal Santo Captain whilst we groom McDonald for the role. Its quite clear the players respect and listen to Dal.
Cunnington is another candidate who like Scotty Pendlebury before him, could become that good that the captaincy chooses him. Not a big talker ala Ablett and Pendlebury, I reckon Cunners will become an A grader who will lift his team. I dont think Swallow has the same ceiling.

We don't have good leaders but when was the last time a North player was in the news because they got into a punch up at a notorious nightclub?

There is nothing wrong with drafting people with exemplary characters. Do you question the courage and commitment of Levi and Two Dogs? No. Are either of them a massive dickhead off the field? No.

Cannot see the club taking Andrew's captaincy any time soon. I like Macmillan and McDonald as future potential captains. Ziebell gets a look in after a couple of 20+ game seasons, can't have your captain missing as many as he does.

Interesting gr.

From Brad prior to round one 2014:

His most coachable player - Jack Ziebell.
The biggest spray he's given a player - Scotty McMahon against Brisbane in Brisbane.
Most frustrating rule - Holding the ball.
The hardest opposition player to stop - Adam Goodes.

Also, Boomer is named by Mick Malthouse as one of their hardest opposition players to stop. Not bad for a 75yr old vertically challenged player.

This is bizarre. Do you really believe that a player needs to be a dickhead to be a good player? That to be a person of good character and a winner is incompatible?

The idea that if we'd drafted less nice guys and more dickheads we'd be a better team is just bizarre to me.

Not dickheads. players with a bit of mongrel. A la Darling at WCE. Yeah he had a fight as an 18 year old at a nightclub? which teenage male hasn't.

Like our current defensive game plan, I think our recruiters have gone to the extreme with recruiting character over talent.

Hope im proven wrong, but history will tell you that our golden years of the 90's had more than its share of "dickheads" as you put it.

Recruiting Archer to North kept him out of trouble at Noble Park.
Bringing Carey to Arden Street kept him out of punch ons as we all know he can very well handle himself in the street.
David King was no angel and neither was Schwatta.
Were not about recruiting thugs but it seems with the intense media scrutiny these days its too much to handle or too damaging to sponsors if we recruit a livewire. Sad that footy has come to this.

The quiet ones are good as long as they get white line fever once a week

Having a captain that leads by example is fine as long as there are other leaders on the team that are prepared to take up the slack on the verbal side of things. Especially when the chips are down.

Ok that makes much more sense. I agree if we've been recruiting people of good character at the expense of talent then that would be disastrous. And yes I agree that there seems to be less 'mongrel' in the team than in years past, although Lindsay Thomas might disagree.

I thought you were implying that nice guys couldn't be great players. Apologies.

How are these two linked? Let's talk football only.

Good points, but I don't think he wants it though. I think he prefers keeping his work rate up when the team depends on him. I personally think the richmond article applies for swallow. Whether he knows it or not, he is our trent cochin. Our teams are similar and our finals hopes are desperate as each others. I hope he reflects on the piece as if it was written for him

This was taken after our loss to Geelong, why the hell is our captain smiling. We got Ziebell and Cunnington who look like they wanna kill someone and our skipper is smiling, not good enough Andrew
