This was taken after our loss to Geelong, why the hell is our captain smiling. We got Ziebell and Cunnington who look like they wanna kill someone and our skipper is smiling, not good enough Andrew

I love Spits, he is a hell of a leader in the way he goes about it and an example to all in effort, work rate and application to a task.

But from my limited perspective he ain't a captains arsehole.
Why do you think that? especially in context of your first line.

What this image says to me..

"I've been gone for nearly a year, spent a couple of halves in the two's and I've slid back into the midfield of a team who wants to challenge top four..this is mad"

However when the captain says

"It's just taking a bit of time to get everything back. My touch is not there at the moment. My work rate is not quite there. I think I just need a couple more runs under the belt,"

Im starting to think he may have come back into a fit team, too soon

Swallow is a senior player and should lead by example in the way he prepares for games and works on game day regardless of his status as captain, as should all senior players. He is an example to all in that regard, and especially the young blokes.

However, from my limited perspective, he seems to lack an edge to his persona that quality captains seem to possess in spades, and that is real leadership. Leadership in presence, in voice, in aggression, in palpable desire, the kind of leadership that demands you follow and will call you out if you don't. The kind of leadership that make team mates walk taller. No offence to Andrew, who is an excellent professional, but I only see that in one player at our club at the minute.

Luke Darcey was discussing this on Talking footy. Showed footage after the game where most of the senior players where hugging Hamish, chit chatting having a laugh. Great look when you have played like shit. I get the feeling some of those players are just content where they are, if we win all good, if we lose, oh well always next week.

Barely keeping a grip?

Horseshit.
He's a first year player barely able to run over half way, with a pretty poor kicking efficiency. What horse-shit? As usual, supporters blow up a player as a champ, ready to rip-em down once the inevitable flaws emerge. Less hype, more realism, better understanding of how demanding the game is and how long it takes most players to develop would be good.

He's one of the best runners at the club.

Sure, he's shanked a few kicks, but also hit some good ones.

He is better defensively than most of our more senior players.

I don't subscribe to the theory that a leader needs to be someone who is able to tear strips off another player "when they need it"

In fact I am not sure I subscribe to the idea that it starts and ends with the captain.

Jack has no issue tearing strips off a player. As a group do they not then have the capabilities people are talking about?

Spitta is not that kind of captain. Legitimate question was Keith Greig that kind of captain?

As a collective group they all need to step up in how they lead on field.

Right now Spitta is fighting his way back from an injury, IMHO this is having an effect on his ability to lead the way he leads. He is the sort of bloke who leads through doing. Which is great when he is up and going because he's doing that, Jack will give blokes a bake. The group works better as a whole.

For me we don't need 1 player to be a better leader, we need 15+ who need to understand enough to be onfield leaders and feel secure enough to give direct open feedback onfield.

For me that is where the gap is.

As for the Hamish stuff wow. They see a guy who played 10 games in 4 years and they go and have a chat after the game. "It's not a good look"

I have heard stories of when it was suburban footy where players from both sides would get together after a game and have a beer. that must have been a woeful look. But it was probably a better sport.

Hamish is likely to be a great mate for some of these guys. yet they shouldn't publicly display that they are happy he's back on the park? Why, because supporters ( who would have some inkling about Hamish's standing within our group of players) and some commentators think it "looks bad"

I sometimes wonder the standards that footballers are held to, are they possible to achieve?

Can someone explain to me how the players looking shitty about the loss is going to have any bearing on Sunday?

I've been fairly vocal about the Hamish stuff and haven't changed my mind. You clearly see it differently.

IF the side had been switched on from the get go and after 4 quarters of genuine effort got done, then maybe the Hamish stuff would've been more palatable.

And of course is goes without saying that had we won it would've looked different.

However when you compound our seemingly indifferent attitude (yet again) within a game with this shit and giggles look after the game it just speaks of a group who don't appear to give that much of a **** about winning premierships.

I wonder if had we won, would Hamish have trudged off with his teammates or broken ranks to run over and congratulate the North players and staff individually?

I do see it differently mate.

I don't see something that happened post game as being something to be up in arms about.

I see a fair bit in game we should be significantly more worried about.

Sorry to butt in on the convo, but it concerns me because it could be reflective of an attitude within the group. Sure he is a mate, and a good one at that, but it appears that footy is just a job to some of these blokes. I see guys I play against at indoor soccer that are more disgusted after a loss (happens regularly;)) than what I have seen from some of our players.

If this is the case, then what is going to change it? Telling them look shitty when we lose?

If we are talking about buy in, then I don't give a f*** what they do after a game. I want to see it during.

Would it be fair to say a fair portion of the players wouldn't take it personally when we lose?
I don't think it would be fair based on the fact that there are few who would know.

Judging on how they looked at the end of the Geelong game, H stuff aside which is neither here nor there for mine, I would think it is close to the mark.

Even during the game, there are very few who are visibly angry that they lost a contest.

Describe how you think that they look?

I have said a few times today I think that they are in a place where when we are not doing well they are not sure which lever to pull. Lock down the game? Try to take it on? Go defensive? All out attack.
