Whats going on with the China game?

Through Koch's arrogance and inability to enforce this "contract", the narrative has been changed from a fantastic story by an innovative club who have actually done brilliantly to change their fortunes through smart marketing and excellent grass-roots efforts (particularly in China but also through their business lunches and work with the Italian community in Adelaide)- to a dislikeable event that is more about one man's belligerence and bullying tactics to script him and his club as being the pioneers of a movement that began well before they started work in China.

Port Adelaide did not invent AFL in China contrary to the belief of many fans and media personnel (ie; Stephen Rowe). They have however marketed it much better from a grass roots level through sponsorship and working with members of the community rather than just using Shanghai as a "cash-grab" or "hit and hope for a home run" as the AFL tried to under Demetriou's reign.

Koch has done amazing things in his time and this China opportunity is something Port Adelaide have worked very hard on over a number of years, but he is in danger of stuffing it up through his conduct to the point where no club will want to work with a president who openly bullies other clubs into scripting his own beliefs as "facts" and "contracts".

The irony or amusing bit is the building in the background is the Courts Building. I will go with District Court in the City

Bullying?

Maybe if the GC stuck to the agreement we wouldn't have this situation...

A good negotiator makes good win-win deals and honours the deal they make. A bad negotiator leaves out significant details from the agreement and then tries to bully the other party to make up for their shortcomings.

If he did his job properly and had every requirement in writing then he wouldn't need to be making threats to GC or asking the AFL to intervene.

Port's china will become North's Friday Night Footy

It could be. Or even Hawthorn's Tasmania.

The problem is if something becomes more important for the entire competition or if you develop a market you can't commit to it's full potential then the AFL will undermine you.

If GC come out and say we will play 3 games in China from 2018 onward, bang, Port are dead.

Since when can the home team dictate what guernsey the opposition can wear?
Gold Coast always wear their red and gold guernsey against Port home or away as it doesn't clash so it shouldn't matter if it's Port's home game

Who's gonna bankroll it? They can't even bring one Chinese company to the table to help cover the cost of putting the game on. How many relationships have they cultivated over there? Zero.

How many Chinese companies have the AFL brought to the table? Zero.

Meanwhile Port Adelaide has AusGold, Shanghai CRED and Cathay Pacific, as well as partnerships with the Hong Kong Football Club (where Port Adelaide members have reciprocal rights mind you), CCTV and schools across Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Neither the AFL nor Gold Coast have any power at all in China. This was built on the back of relationships and doing things like sponsoring Team China to enable them to travel to participate in the International Cup. They'll try to use Mark Evans to hijack the Suns into being 'China's team' through the introductions he would have made through being the AFL's representative in dealing with organizing the match, but it won't work because that's not how you do business in China.

It's not like Australia where money is the most important thing - friendships and partnerships are.

China's long standing friendship with Port Adelaide is certainly up there with the likes of Ross & Chandler, JFK & Sinatra and Hamlet & Horatio.
