Matthews and daylight. You can throw a blanket over the rest.

Platten, Crawf, Mitchell, Crimmins, Tuck and Pritchard were/are no mugs but they pale in to insignificance against Lethal in his prime. His 1977 season is unparalleled. 91 goals and averaged 28 possies a game. Those numbers are illegal
Particularly since 28 touches a game in 1977 is equal to about 40 today isn't it?

Dont undersell John Platten either. He is alone at #2 imo.

Barney really has no peer why are we even debating this
Don't know that anyone is debating Barney's position as our best ever midfielder/Player.... Rather, Mitchell's place in the pantheon of our greatest midfielders....Does he sit second behind Barney & Ahead of Platten & Crawford....Or third behind Platten, or fourth behind Crawford?

I'd have him just behind Platten ATM, but ahead of Crawford....Anyone naive enuf to put him ahead of Barney, clearly never saw Matthews play!

Though it's unequivocal that He's the best center-man to play for this club ever.

I like the fact that mitch won a premiership with crawf, who was mentored by the rat, who played and won flags with tuck, who played with barney, who won premierships with crimmins, who played with Ian Law, who won a flag with Brendan Edwards and Graham Arthur.

Which young gun will stretch down to the next successful era ? langford ? anderson ?

Mathews is the best rover therefor mid and or on baller the club has had.

Regarding Mitch it is all in the eye of the beholder. I now rate Sam as the fifth best player I have seen at Hawthorn and therefor the best centre. I am prepared to say that he is now rivaling Ian Stewart. Did someone mention Diesel? Surely not he has yet to play a game at Hawthorn apart from one NAB appearance.

has mitch ever been reported or suspended?
Only time I can think of was when he got Johnson high going for the ball early in 2011... granted he should of been reported for his hit on ablett in the 2008 grandfinal :p

edit ~ ridiculous that this could of cost him the brownlow

Every champion team (and we've had many) in any sport needs a strong heart and a strong brain. If Hodge is the current heart than Mitchell is the brain. And what a brain.

As far as our greatest centremen? You can't go wrong with Sammy or the Rat. I'm happy we've had both.

I think Lethal Leigh should be left out of this sort of discussion. He was just the greatest player ever, so it's not fair that our other players are compared to him.

And he did play a lot of his career in the forward line so he is not really a midfielder.

Sammy is some player, though, and easily one of our top 5 of all time.
And, I reckon the blonde Number 5 sitting up there in heaven would be proud to see such a great player wearing his number.

Mitchell has that awesome ability to take an extra second to make players commit to him before he dishes off the pill. I've lost track of the amount of time's i've held my breath because an opponent is bearing down on lil' Mitch, only to see a 25m cannon of a handball shoot out of the congestion and straight into a player's arms. He's even fooled the cameraman on occasion, with the screen shifting one way, with Mitchell going the other.

Short, stumpy, can't run, but jeez he makes up for it by being one of the celverest footballers of the modern era.

He definitely shares these characteristics in common with Barney....Difference being, Barney could mark & Kick goals....And Plenty of em.

Sammy has better hands so far as hand-balling goes.....Both have tremendous footballing brains & equally as good in traffic.

None of Platten, Lethal, Crawf were centremen.
Sammy is up against Wallace, Edwards & Bohan.
He is number one for me.

Mitchell is ineligible for the Brownlow: Everyone says "tough luck"
Fyfe is ineligible for the Brownlow: Everyone says "WHAT AN OUTRAGE! CHANGE THE RULES! THIS IS AN INJUSTICE!"

He is a perfect example of the over rating of early draft picks.

No one wanted him in the first draft he was available and we got him in the second round the next year.

He now sits comfortably amongst the greatest players Hawthorn has ever had and he is still improving.

Amazingly, Mitchell and Hodge's career have been so colinear that they are the most successful duo in brownlow history. They have polled more brownlow votes in the same game than any other duo ever.
It's these two I most fear losing. Every year, my fingers are crossed that one of them doesn't go down for too long. The twin towers, they're in the middle people, not the forward line.

Mitchell is our best centreman in my view, although I never saw Bohan.
Best Hawthorn players? Matthews, Dunstall, Hudson, Franklin then a blanket over Platten-Mitchell-Brereton then another blanket over Tuck-Knights-Hodge-Mew.
Mitchell could move higher because he's still playing and is only getting better.
