Some people think some clubs 'tank', yet others only list manage when they're playing list is too old & on the slide.

Over the last 12 Years since the turn of the Century, which clubs have list managed, & which clubs have Tanked?

List management is transparent with no hidden agendas. There is no need for deception.

Under list management see GC or GWS. List management is almost about a different strategy long term versus short term etc...Eg. they are not expected to win as their list is so currently inferior and young but are focussing on getting better over time in the long term so they can compete to win. The team still trys to win even though their characteristics make it very difficult despite the intent

Tanking is about playing not as they are expected to through various means for various purposes usually to get gain from the deception/manipulation. Eg. lose when they are expected to compete for a win

List Management:

Sending key players with ailments off for surgery so they are right for pre-season once finals are out of reach
Playing/trying young players in place of older players who you have already made a call on and are likely to be delisted at end of year
Giving very important roles to young developing players for educational purposes

Tanking:

Manipulating moves within games with sole purpose of losing
This can be in the form of:
- pulling/moving players who are dominating their position on the day
- playing players out of position, not for purposes of development, but for purpose of poor performance
- making no attempt to make tactical/structural moves when opposition is clearly on top
Not selecting teams on merit - this differs from playing youth ahead of experience, in the circumstances where the overlooked experienced player isn't suffering an injury and will have a long term role to play at the club beyond that season.

Thats my take anyway.

Whats worse for Melbourne is, that based on reports they actually stated they plan to lose games - so it seems its no longer opinion based or circumstantial evidence.

List management is announced by the club when they state they will persue a youth policy for the rest of the season
Tanking is when a club pretends to want to win but dont

Its all about letting the fans know what will happen

Agreed. But how can a so called professional league allow clubs to play teams full of kids in the name of development knowing full well they'll get belted week in, week out and then turn around and stamp down on tanking?! The end result is much the same, with both clubs being rewarded come draft day - this is the Hypocrisy the AFL will want to avoid and thus will give Melbourne no more than a slap on the wrists....

Pretty simple: tanking is carried out on match day. It’s coaches making an effort on match day to not win the match, by making or not making (that’s important) moves that they would normally make under regular circumstances. It’s actually making an effort on the day to lose the match.

Anything done in terms of team selections, injuries etc is a grey area. But once the team is selected and the match starts, coaches (and indeed players) should be trying to do what they can within their influence to improve their team’s performance. If they’re not, they’re tanking.

It’s funny all this crap about Melbourne. Terry Wallace has admitted publicly that he tanked at Richmond. They ignored it.

Good question. I think list managing they still try and win games but are more focused on development ie if in a situation where they can win a game they try and win it rather than making moves which will more than likely result in bad results.

Melbourne supporters, get over ot your club tanked.

list management is an ongoing function of professional football undertaken by all clubs.

tanking is throwing games.

So if this "List Management" strategy results in a club losing a number of games and getting a beneficial draft pick as a result, does it then become tanking?

Many other clubs tanked as well, Melbourne fans just want fairness, which we're not getting.

Can I give you an example of very different player management, Juddy 2007, Eagles defending the 2006 flag, Juddy club captain playing injured ... finals campaign beckoned.
2010, Darren Glass club captain playing injured. Sent for surgery early in the season after 8 games.

Anything sinister here?

You'll get your fair whack, dont worry to much about the speculation in the press its what people are saying behind closed doors that will flloat you boat or sink your ship.

If the same spotlight is turned on West coast for their blatant tanking then i'll be happy
