The Guest

There's only one way to review this one:

First third: Started off like a house on fire with endless possibilities. 9/10
Second third: Little more formulaic but still held onto a reasonable level of intrigue. 5/10
Last third: Went to jello and hard to believe it being the same movie one started to watch. 1/10

The Conjuring.

Felt like a mashup of amityville horror and the exorcist with a bit of Chucky thrown in!

Didnt like the cliches, eg very, very quiet, nothing happening, then BANG! SOMETHING SCARY!!

BUT..I can't deny it was very well directed, acted - was one of the most polished horror movies I've seen. And yes very creepy too.

7.5/10

The Immigrant - Wouldn't say carried, but definitely strengthened by the performances of Cotillard and Phoenix. James Gray is a pretty interesting filmmaker. 7/10

The King of Arcades

All those Billy Mitchell posts prompted me to watch this snoozer.

Disappointed Billy Mitchell hardly featured at all.

Needs more Billy Mitchell...

lol
This is the one that prompted me to watch King of Kong

Gotta hand it to Richie Knuckles though for keeping the dream of penny arcades alive. Man I wish I had the time to set up just 1 or 2 of those machines in my basement.

My first machine would be Donkey Kong, just so I could 'doctor' with the main board and get a higher score than Billy...

Ha! At 100min there was just a lil' bit too much filler for me. But yeah, loved Richie's arcade.

Love KoK! Seems the feature based on the doco has stalled.

Tonight I'm gonna watch the Atari Game Over freebie courtesy of XBox.

Meanwhile, I go to the local shopping centre today and they're selling old tabletop games for $600...

An American Werewolf in London

One of my all-time faves. Love to see it again on the big screen.

Thirty-three years later, the transformation scene still looks amazing.

Maybe it's a sign I'm getting old but I even felt sorry for the suit in the subway this time around...

Nice, I could do with a new coffee table. Not sure what the missus would say about it though...:(
Ha! Yeah, I've often thought about getting an arcade. And tabletops are less of a hassle. MUST have a plastic stool!

As Above, So Below

Has all the elements for a good claustrophobic, archaeological horror :) and in general does a pretty good job.
Indiana Jones vs The Decent just about gets you there. It's better than you'd think. 6.5/10

The Hunger Games - Mockingjay pt1.

Average at best. Haven't read the books and wouldn't classify myself a fan but this seems to be one of the few times I would say a lot seems to be getting lost in translation, so many themes that warrant discussion and exploration but just don't get brought up. Lawrence is far from her best and the rest or the cast seem to be phoning it in as well. Worst part is save for the final 15 minutes very little actually progresses. It's very dark and violent but this is shameless profiteering from the studio. A 2 and 1/2 hour (or god forbid 3 hour) runtime with some editing and this is a full book. 6/10

I'm a fan of his direction. Probably put Two Lovers as my favourite of his followed by Little Odessa which has a great cast.

Absolutely fantastic movie. John Landis ftw. And then that shower scene. :fire::fire::fire::eek:

Nah, he will always be a campaigner of not letting us see enough of the wolf...

Hadn't seen it for ages. Such an elegant and economic gem.

Landis really is on fire here. That Nazi stormtrooper Kessler killing spree scene is still nuts!

Agree with you there, managed to get through it after a couple of past attempts (fell asleep in the first 10 minutes each time), seemed to me to be a reboot of Running Man crossed with the Truman Show but aimed at kids, and the ending was a bit of a non event, but suppose that was designed so they could make a second and third followup usingthe same plot as the first.
