First MI was great, the rest have been shithouse. Can't believe they've been popular enough to make five of them, actually I take that back considering there are 7 Fast and the Furious movies and GI Joe got a sequel, MI franchise is amazing in comparison.
The main character in Karl Pilkington's made-up movie might be onto something ...

I'm not ragging on the action genre as it's produced some great movies, but the standard produced has become a joke and pales to the glory days of the 80's-90's.
Action movies from the 80-90's were campy af

Rather they bring a little bit of realism these days rather than resort to the crap one liners and over the top fight scenes/explosions.

The campiness is part of the charm, these days action movies take themselves far too seriously and end up being bland.

Aside from Mad Max and Casino Royale, the modern ones I've liked the most have been cheesy throwbacks like Kingsman/John Wick.

Blade Runner (Final Cut) - 9.5/10
Not really much to say. I hadn't seen it in a decade or more, I couldn't remember which version I saw last (there's apparently 7), and I was blown away by the production and special effects in the film. It looked amazing (still). A masterpiece.

Was going to wait to watch the Lobster, but managed to catch a showing last night, mainly because it feels like this was one of the more popular films on this thread this/last year.

Pretty great in the end.

Have seen Dogtooth and Alps from Lanthimos before, and would sandwich this in between those two. Dogtooth truly is a wonderful, horrific film. But this hit all the right insane beats.

8/10.

Grabbing Dogtooth now, The Lobster keeps popping into my head at unexpected times so who knows what Dogtooth will do...

The Martian - fairly average I thought. Felt long but wasn't really slow as there was always something happening, it's just that whatever was happening was so boring that this could have almost been a true story - 5/10

Foxcatcher -Only saw the 30 f0r 30 documentary recently and had no idea of this story until then. Very good performances from Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. Crazy story and if I had not seen the doco, I would think that they had taken liberties with the truth. If anything, they seem to have downplayed how crazy du Pont was. 7.5/10

The Fat and the Angry. Swedish film in 2 parts that was on World Movies recently. True story of a credit card scam in Gothenburg that involves Russian gangsters, the Swedish underworld, corrupt councilors, migrant market workers and corrupt cops.

Confronting and violent, it shows how a few people getting in above their heads can snowball.

Very well made and acted.

Star Wars - The Force Awakens. Terrific swashbuckling old fashioned entertainment. Took me back to being the 10/11 year old watching the original.

This managed to capture the feel of the original, but was able to make it a modern classic. The right amount of humour, action, tension... After the prequels, this is a Godsend.

Daisy Ridley was terrific as the heroine Rey.

My favourite Star Wars film.

I feel like along with Super Size Me, its a bit of a scare tactic movie in which, well, Yaeh Derr, of course if you eat ridiculous amounts of sugar its not gonna be good for you.
I think the premise is a little different (I haven't seen it) but I think he only eats food that is supposedly healthy but in fact contains a lot of sugar.

Steve Jobs

stupid me thought this would be an interesting exploration into the history of the battle for PC dominance over the last 3 decades. Instead it was a boring semi-insight into Jobs relationship with his daughter.

The history of Apple is such a rich field to mine but instead they went the usual boring Hollywood route inorder to try to appeal to women.
