Focus - Unexpectedly loved the first hour of this. A scene that I could have watched endlessly, B.D ******* Wong, serious style. And then it takes a nosedive for the uninspired. Just waiting to see what was what and that wasn't even anything special. Do yourself a favour if you're watching this for the first time and after the obvious transition to the second half of the film, stop watching. Much better that way.

Dumb Criminals: The Movie - Paul Fenech's latest project about some dumb but well-meaning criminals. Same as the web series, this is filled with re-creations of real life dumb crimes from all over the world . Very similar to Housos but more kind hearted. Typical Fenech humour but having a smaller cast works well for this movie. No masterpiece, but if you're in the right mood there's some laughs to be had. 6.5/10

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens

Pretty much perfect, great for hardcore star wars fans & more casual fans of the series alike.
I really liked the new characters and the comic relief throughout the film.

There's 4 aspects that need discussion:

The plot/story

It's...eh. It's not *bad*, it's just middling. Where Birdman was deep but still engaging and relatable, this isn't. It's a bit predictale/cliched. But there's still interesting aspects there. 3/5

The visuals

Like something I've never seen before. If you've watched it on a screener and think you've seen it, please punch yourself in the face then head to a cinema. Every image is perfect. The depth, clarity. It's like nothing else. It's something that needs to be experienced on a big screen and in high def. Just do it. 5/5

Tom Hardy

The first real contender to Sly I've seen. He goes up against Leo in full flight and stands his ground. Powerful but not over the top. Hardy's a bonified star. 4.5/5

Leo

As I said before, it's done. The Oscar's going to Leo. And he absolutely deserves it. He's incredible. You can't question his devotion to his art. 4.5/5

Overall: 4/5

I've got heaps left to watch. Danish Girl, Steve Jobs, Trumbo, Concussion, Big Short. But I don't see any of them getting anywhere NEAR Leo.
I haven't seen Revenant yet but the only possible person who can beat Leo would be either Carell, or Cranston. Fassbender was good but I don't think it would be anywhere near beating Leo.

Not Quite Hollywood

Documentary about the classic Ozploitation era films. Informative and highly entertaining and moves along at a cracking pace. Sometimes too cracking.

Haven't seen it yet, but it's Lubezki man. The best in the business.

Watch The New World for a comparison.

Acting is so subjective. I thought Hardy had the easier role, though. He was completely in his wheelhouse there. Leo looked like he was actually stretching his acting muscles for a change.
