Disagree I don't think Hardy really was that good sure he's proformance was suitable for the role but Leo killed it one of the best roles of he's career and he's had a lot of great roles
I thought Tom Hardy was better than Leo in The Revenant, and Leo was still very good.

I'll write more when I get home, but it's over. It's done. Give the Oscar to Leo.
I've got heaps left to watch. Danish Girl, Steve Jobs, Trumbo, Concussion, Big Short. But I don't see any of them getting anywhere NEAR Leo.
You may have shot your wad too early. Just saw Cranston in Trumbo, my money is on him. Brilliant performance. And helped by the fact that Hollywood love movies about Hollywood.

Revenant - yeah this was visually and aurally stunning. A feast for the senses really. Beautiful cinematography and a near perfect soundtrack. Leo was in absolute supreme form too. If he doesn't win best actor, it means he's actually cursed.

The story itself is simple but it doesn't need to be complicated to tell a good story. I predicted most of what would happen but that doesn't diminish the quality of the film.

It's quite similar to Sicario for me in the building of tension. It probably won't beat Spotlight for film of the year but the performances mean it will probably have a longer legacy. 4.5/5

The Revenant - So stunning, so brutal. Saw it on Hoyts 'Extreme Screen' thing. Totally worth it. Hardy and Leo were both amazing, but it was hard to understand Hardy sometimes. I think it was just that drawl-y way of speaking to fit into the period.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. One of those performances could be better. I'd love it if that was the case because it'd mean it was one hell of a performance.

I agree with you and I'm certainly haven't been on the Leo has been robbed bandwagon. Probably deserved one early in his career for Gilbert Grape or Basketball Diaries, but finally a role that really demands recognition. Up their with past winners like Benigni, Whitaker, Brody as an instantly classic performance.

Sportsbet have Leo a $1.25 favourite for the Oscar, that's extremely low. I agree I couldn't understand Hardy half the time I almost wished they kept the subtitles up. They were both brilliant I also think Leo probably had the harder gig Hardy got to bounce off other actors whereas Leo for the majority was on his own with extreme close ups. He's certainly overdue for an Oscar I think he puts so much work into his craft and I haven't seen him be anything less than great. Django unchained and Wolf of Wall street were super performances that he makes look easy.

Just on Oscars I see Mark Rylance is the favourite for best supporting actor, what do you guys think? I mean I liked him but he played a likeable spy that had barely any range of emotions at all in the film.

I thought it was an incredibly subtle and subdued performance. He would be my pick this year in a very crowded field.

I'd have Stallone and Hardy ahead. Maybe Michael Shannon too.

Saw the Revenant.
Not a fan. It looked fantastic, but at 2.5 hours its a bit of a drag.
I can't think of any nice/light/good/happy moments in the film.
Out of all films I've seen this year I think I've enjoyed this one the least. just didn't feel it.

If leo wins, so be it. have loved alot of his films before but this one isn't one i'd see again...

Even though it was a bit clunky at times this made for a terrific story with some convincing acting.
Solid thriller with a real heart to in its core.................Happy to forgive the 'cheap' moments for the greater good 8/10

Spotlight - 6/10

I was really excited for this but it ended up being a very boring procedural. No characters, no suspense, shot like a telemovie. Really forgettable. Someone should do a documentary on the subject instead.

Nah he's got a point. The more I think about The Revenant, the more unsure I get.

It's really, really long for a story that simply doesn't need that much time to be told. Then there's the fact Leo's character seems to be in God Mode the entire time while the rest of the film is grounded in reality. It's just a weird contradiction and adds to what I said before, maybe here or Letterboxd, in that I just didn't feel any real connection or relatability to the story or any of the characters. Which is a pretty significant failure of storytelling.

Idk. Maybe I'm just rebelling against what's a pretty clear Oscar bait piece. And I stand by my comments about Leo and Hardy. But the film itself is nowhere near a contender for Best Picture.

As a father I felt an incredible connection with Leo's character stopping at nothing to avenge his sons murder at the hands of that scheming, greedy scumbag and I'm sure many other fathers will too.
