I went to buy the ticket online and the glasses were optional which made me think I don't need them, but just above the session times the legend says IMAX and 3D, whether as some of them just say IMAX (night sessions, not going to them) but those ones don't even give you the option of buying the glasses.

Yeah it's a shame there are a lot more IMAX/3D sessions than IMAX (don't require any viewing glasses).

A few that I have watched lately.

O'Brother, Where Art Thou

I'll start off by saying I'm a big Coen Brothers fan and how much it pains me to say this but was very disappointed. Hail Caesar par disappointed.

Look it's not a bad film but it just didn't really do anything for me. Story wasn't engaging, the dark humor wasn't there for a Coen movie and the characters I couldn't invest in. At the end I was like "Is that it?".

Set in 19th century China, it's a revenge martial arts film. Best way to describe would be a B movie version of Kill Bill.

The direction is way off and RZA(who was also the director) is not a great lead to have but this is alot of fun to watch while you have a couple of hours to kill.

Russell Crowe is great in this, not a role you would expect him to do but I thought he was the MVP in the film.

Coco

Well, Pixar's last few movies have been more misses than hits, so I went into this movie more than a little worried. And...

... Make no mistake; this movie is a ****ing masterpiece.

Great voice acting, great setting, stunning visuals, incredible soundtrack.
The story was very clever, had a nice twist, and of course packs the usual Pixar gut-punches.

This FELT like a Pixar movie. I couldn't be happier with it, even though I cried like a girl.
Go see it.

Olaf's Frozen Adventure

Well, now that the Coco review is outta the way get ready for a solid melt.

Remember how before every Pixar movie they screen a typically fantastic 5-7 short movie? Usually gorgeously animated, heart-felt, experimental and captivating, it's one of the highlights of seeing these movies at the theater.

Now my screening began at 6:15. By 6:30 the trailers were done and dusted. Then we begin what I thought was a trailer for Frozen 2 or some shit.
Nope, it's a Frozen short story.
While pretty pissed off, I decided that at least it'll only be a few minutes.

... 25 minutes later the credits rolled on this abortion.

One of the most boring and cliched featurettes I've ever seen got shoehorned in before my movie. 40 minutes after my advertised start time I finally got to watch the movie I came to see.
Audible moans of "thank ****" throughout the audience when it finished indicated that Disney made a really shit decision including this.

If you'e going to see Coco, avoid this pointless shitheap.

Your Name - This was...beautiful. I don't know if the director Makoto Shinkai is considered the next Miyazaki but this definitely paints him as an incredible talent.

The Freaky Friday beginnigns were hella charming, but then it just elevated itself again and again with some just breathtaking moments. Absolutely gorgeous art, and a J-Rock soundtrack that I might even listen to on occasion.

I'm sure it might get accused for being overly sappy, but I had no qualms with it, the right amount of sap. Will be keeping a close eye on Shinkai's work, past and future from here on out.

Brad's Status.

Almost a sequel or sibling to the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Ben Stiller plays a guy having a mid-life crisis with a touch of Maladaptive Daydreaming. His mental commentary tells you that he feels his life is inadequate compared to his old college compatriots. A trip with his son to gain admission to Harvard leads him to reevaluate his life.

Maybe Stiller is playing himself in these roles but it works well. Michael Sheen only has one decent scene but absolutely kills it. The rasping solo violin soundtrack adds to the sense of unease.

Not for all but if you liked Secret Life of Walter Mitty you might like this.

8/10.

Probably tied with Good Time for the best movie I've seen this year. Films about impoverished characters can have a tendency to feel exploitative, but this veers away from being the kind of misery porn those films typically embrace. It's not exactly joyous either, and if the focus wasn't on the children, this is probably much more depressing, but Baker doesn't linger on anything dangerous; it's mostly fields, sunsets, and beautifully decorated (if tacky) motel landscapes.

This also works as a meta commentary on the looming shadow Disney casts over the film industry (especially post-Fox merger). These are the kinds of characters and human beings the studio leaves behind, and these are the kinds of films in danger of disappearing over time.

Just beautiful. I look forward to Willem Dafoe's Oscar speech.
Funnily, I was thinking of going to see this but baulked at paying $20.50 for a movie without explosions and special effects that'll look just as good watching at home for free. Interesting times for the cinema business.

I saw this a couple of days ago and enjoyed it, not really sure what you found abhorrent about it.

It wasn't anything special but certainly a decent way to wile away an afternoon. I'd give it 6.5/10.

Good premise. Half way through the movie flips in to something ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I like a journey in a movie, but this was stupid. I felt nothing for the protagonist. The acting is forced. The messages are clear but unclear at the same time. It was just a mess.

I think though that a film that looks so visually lovely is likewise worth seeing on the big screen. Films like Gone with the Wind, Doctor Zhivago, Days of Heaven, There Will Be Blood etc might have no special effects or explosions but are far more visually dazzling, and worth seeing on a big screen. The Florida Project was a beautifully composed film and deserves the same (though isn't the visual spectacle of the movies I listed above, I should note).

I agree with Marlowe's review, and think the paragraph about Disney's shadow and the film industry is an interesting one. It's definitely a film which is both less depressing because of its focus on the kids, yet is all the more powerful because of it.

I also watched Paddington 2, which was such an absolute delight. The pair of Paddington movies are such gorgeous family films, and beautiful love letters to London and British film culture more widely. Everyone in the film is having the time of their life, particularly Hugh Grant hamming it up as the villain. Sadly the two Paddington movies haven't had the public interest they probably should have, because they're as good as you can ask a kid's film to be.

Wind River - 7/10. It was good despite being so depressing but i think Taylor Sheridan should stick to writing, found his direction a bit clunky compared to Hell or High Water and Sicario.

I'm sure you can go to an independent cinema that offers cheaper tickets on an allocated day.

If you're with Optus, Hoyts has a partnership which you can get adult tickets for $12.00

The Unforgiven

Haven't watched many Western movies in my life. Shanghai Noon and Django Unchained are probably the only ones now that I think about, so wasn't going in with high expectations despite what I reviews I had read beforehand.

Really really good film. Great story, great characters, great pacing. You see alot of films where people like cops, criminals, outlaws etc murder people and move on like nothing happened but here you see the affects of people's actions which I really liked.

Shoutout to Gene Hackman who was amazing in this, great performance.

8.5/10
The Unforgiven is a great film. It has been a while since I saw it but was filmed in an era where Westerns were considered tired.

I think you're right, the quality of the acting was fabulous and turned a good film into a great one.
If you liked the unforgiven and Gene oh boy there is a whole back catalogue of great Clint Westerns and Gene movies.

Go watch them, he'll go watch every movie both guys made prior to 1990

Clint made a career out of Westerns but he's done other great movies, Gene can play hero or vilian with equal aplomb
It's just Unforgiven guys, there is no the.

NYE and I'm nit picking corrections on the internet, woot :drunk:

Great movie but
