The El Mariachi Trilogy (Robert Rodriguez).

El Mariachi

Low budget, independent film. I very much enjoyed this. Engaging premise and a really good ending.

Desperado

Budget went up and in comes some of the players. This is a seriously good action film, Steve Buscemi is fantastic as is the end when "El" brings in his boys (one of whom was El in the previous film) to run riot.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico

Some say the weakest of the trilogy however I again really enjoyed it. Budget gone up again however Depp was brilliant, like the first Pirates movie (thought the rest were trash) you just wait for his character (a sadistic yet likeable CIA killer) to be on screen.

This is easily one of the best action trilogies, Agent Sands and Cheech Marins characters from Desperado and OUTM were great to watch as were the "guns for hire" brought in.
I've only seen Desperado as a teenager and really, really liked it. Maybe it was just because of Salma Hayek, but still, thought it was a great film. I've never gone back to watch it again, but from what you've said, it seems like a good one to revisit (in order with the other two in the trilogy).

The Neverending Story

Does not stand up to viewing as an adult. Artax's death doesn't have the same punch. And surprisingly short, considering its title. Sorry couldn't resist.

3/10
I think it holds up very well

Sequel however

Quality action trilogy.

Hopefully itā€™s on one of the streaming platform, wouldnā€™t mind rewatching it this weekend

Eurovision on Netflix: 8/10 - Having been to Iceland and massive fans of Will Farell and Rachel McAdams i was hopeful this would be great and it was truly that, great performances and the weird wacky vibes of Eurovision came through in spades

Eurovision - 3/10

One of the lamest Will Ferrell movies yet, worse than Holmes & Watson. Waited two hours for a single joke but it plays the drama of the contest almost too seriously to ever be funny. Plus the music is dreadful as well. Makes me yearn for the days of Blades of Glory.

Aw. I watched it tonight and liked it. But then, I watched it like it was Rachel McAdams movie and not Ferrellā€™s. If you consider heā€™s not the main character itā€™s much better and it improves his performance. Dan Stevens and Pierce Brosnan were great. McAdams was awesome.

Itā€™s too long though by about 30 minutes. A couple of reality stretching moments which was enough to ask if they wanted to be too silly. It had a real sweetness to it though I would have been glad if they focused on.

A 7/10 for me but I was blissfully filled on wine and pizza so it got a lot of credit for a happy wholesome evening.

Shoplifters. A brilliant Japanese film about a family living on the edge of society and just managing to survive. The dynamics are very strange as they are not a typical family unit. More a rag tag group of people that rely on each other.

It is a slow moving study of life and morality. I sensed a Jacques Tati vibe in the way it was filmed. 9/10

I think this is a massively divisive film.

I think blade runner is an absolute masterpiece, Iā€™ve watched it a bunch of times and if itā€™s ever on Iā€™m usually drawn in entirely. I put it on once for my wife to watch (before we saw 2049) she was asleep 20 minutes in and any other time sheā€™s tried to watch bits and pieces sheā€™s been bored as batshit.

I wouldnā€™t watch 2049 without seeing the original BUT my wife did and still enjoyed it.
Never got the outpouring of love for Bladerunner but I know it well enough to realize the original pisses on the sequel.

I also prefer the version with Harrison Fords narration but I have no idea what cut that is.

Too slow, too political and too heavy for me at the time but in its defence in that regard I was STAR WARS all the way for sci-fiā€™ish type stuff at the time.

First impressions last I guess.

The Invisible Man

Was watchable but definitely not one of Leigh Whannell's best.

The Godfather (1972)

What does it say about me that I only watched this for the first time last night? I thought it was pretty good, but maybe not as absolutely classic as a lot of other people find it. While I kinda liked just being dropped into the wedding scene and having to work out who the hell was who, it just felt way too drawn out, as did a lot of the scenes. Maybe that's been hyper-critical, but it could've maintained the same epic scale while trimming some of the fat. All that being said, I enjoyed the film and particularly loved all the actors at the height of their powers. I understand why it's heralded as such a classic, it just didn't resonate that much with me personally. 8/10

I only watched it a few years ago and I agree completely with your assessment. Felt exactly the same.

I think it more to do with the time it was released and what competition there was for such gangster movies then.

Really the horses head scene was ā€œin your face evilā€œ for the period.

Tis a classic but I would take GOODFELLAS over it every time.

Going to be watching the Daniel Craig Bond films over the next few days. Have seen Casino Royale and Skyfall before but not the others.

Casino Royale - 8/10

Obviously hit the nail on the head with the reboot of the Bond franchise. Craig establishes himself as a great new Bond in this film and while the film is definitely a Bond film, it doesn't hit every cliche of the older films. The Poker scene was great, with the breaks between gameplay having short action/dramatic sequences. Eva Green is sensational as Bond girl.

Quantum of Solace - 4/10

Messy. Over complicated. Shitty villain. s**t title name for a film. First half of the movie was decent (opera scene was great) and I forgot I was watching a poorly reviewed film then the 2nd half reminded me why. Doesn't even feel like a Bond movie at times. Had to read up on the story throughout because none of it made sense. Bond girl's revenge story felt tacked on. Ending is absolute trash (WTF was that setting?)

The difference in quality between these first 2 films is astronomical.

I know Skyfall is great so I can't wait to watch that one.
