The Evil Dead (remake)

I saw this when it was first released and compared it to the original movies (The Evil Dead 1 & 2 are two of my favourite horror/comedies) and that was a big mistake.

The Evil Dead is alot like playing the new Doom game, just flat out action with no real development needed and taking that approach made me like the film a bit better - it's definitely got some terrific imagery. The characters are still horrible, all completely forgettable outside of Jessica Lucas who is only memorable for how good she looked even covered in bloody puke. It definitely packs a punch though, doesn't hold back, violent as **** and definitely fun but the characters and their stupidity just make it a typical slasher flick, with a curse instead of a masked killer.

6.5/10

Animal Kingdom - First time viewing it. Very good movie with solid performances all round. 8/10.

The Fighter - Another movie about a dysfunctional family so to speak. Again very good performances all round.
Prob not one I would watch to often have no seen it since it first came about but it is well made. Bale steals the show.
Shame he has not been in much since the trilogy, but I think of the roles that have been around for guys his age and cant immediately think of anything that would have really suited him apart from maybe The Revenant off the top of my head.

Before I Fall: not the first and not the last to use the groundhog day formula but for what it is (a superficial teen drama) it's executed pretty damn well 7/10.

American Pastoral: Not a film with great direction but packs enough star power and drama to be watchable. Dakota Fanning all grown up. 6.5/10

First Girl I Loved: Indie film regarding a love triangle of sorts and unrequited love with teens in suburban LA. Has a pretty low rating on IMDB but I was pleasantly surprised and liked it a lot. 7.5/10

20th Century Women: Liked it more from a style point of view than I actually liked the substance of the film. Style over substance haha but the style was really good. Some great music in it I thought. 7/10

Paterson: Can't really rate couldn't get through it as it did nothing for me and switched off about midway through.

Mama.

First off, the direction is really good and it's well shot and beautiful, the acting is mostly good (though it's probably the worst I've seen Chastain or Coster-Waldau) and the story is interesting. I found the two young girls to be quite creepy, especially the younger one, there is a good suspenseful feeling to the film.

So it really should be a great horror movie, but it's simply... not. It doesn't use it's atmosphere, the actors do OK with what they're given but the characters (besides the children) are empty and the worst part is that it's just not scary, not even a little scary, nice horror atmosphere but not effectively scary.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - Wasn't totally without highlights but wholly unsatisfying and most of the jokes fell flat, only for characters to over laugh to make us feel like they should be funny. Frankly felt like a television episode that would have more justification because of future episodes. 2/10

American Ultra
- What a mess of a movie. Motivations make no sense, cliched as anything and twists that nobody cares about because they aren't set up properly. Also a final sequence that nobody asked for. 1/10

The Wedding Ringer
- enjoyed it in part but had sequences that just felt like filler sequences (i.e. the bachelor party where this movie took a massive Hangover detour for no real reason). 3.5/10

War for the Planet of the Apes
- not an enjoyable movie but intense and riveting. Not nearly as action packed as the second one in the series. Very touching end to a good trilogy. 7.5/10

The Edge of Seventeen.

Well.. what can I say. Well done.

Well done to a movie, that had me in tears from laughter in the first 5 minutes. That is a first. And have a kick ass Billy Joel song too in the first 10 minutes.

Bravo, loved it. 8.5/10
Woody Harrelson steals every scene that he is in.

Colossal (2017) - Weird, original monster movie starring Anne Hathaway. About at party girl who moves back home after she's kicked out of here boyfriends apartment and she discovers her actions are related to a monster causing chaos in South Korea. Starts out strange but funny, but things take a darker turn. The monster looked cool considering the budget. Nothing too mind-blowing but this was entertaining throughout. Quite funny at times and I liked the ending. Nacho Vigalondo is certainly an original writer/director and this is my second favourite film of his after Timecrimes. Worth a watch if you like offbeat cinema. 7/10

The Asian friend guy was hilarious too. That is a movie i'll have to see again. Hailee Steinfield was really great in it.

IT.

A fantastic coming of age story with a horror film mixed in there.

The Loser's Club are the most lovable group of kids you'll find in a movie, well acted.

Skarsgard is super creepy as Pennywise, Derry itself is just as scary.

There are some undeveloped parts, some continuity and pacing problems, but it's a fantastic movie.

Unforgiven (1992) Gritty, brutal, beautifully shot and superbly acted. Love the script too, they really nail that old school way of talking. Amazing western 9/10
Sure I rented this as a young teenager. Can barely remember a thing. Think it was made for thinking adults.

Assassin's Creed.

kinda got that there was double crossing and surprise agendas but it was a tad confusing in the 3rd act. watching on the plane may have detracted from experience of the viewing.

Shot Caller (2017): Looked up to see who the director was and now know that i've seen and enjoyed his previous efforts in Felon and Snitch. This one didn't disappoint too. 7.5/10
