What's this all about? Well it's all lies, for a start.

... I hear you say. Then you go on to say:

"Normally, BigFooty is puritanical about people posting rumours! What the hell are they doing?"

What this means:

We feel that our members should have a basic right to discuss any issues that are relevant to football.

Our users are publishers, and are responsible for material they publish through BigFooty.com. This has always been the case.

From now on, unsubstantiated rumours - those without a link to an official announcement or news report - and off-field scandals will mostly be flicked into this board.

Users with rumours or wanting to discuss scandals should do so on this board.

This will keep other boards clean and save moderators the work of cleaning up the muck and leave the footy boards for discussion of footy.

What can you do?

Post your rumour and scandal threads but think before you post. You're the publisher and you could be held liable for what you post.

If you see, on any other board in BigFooty, an unsubstantiated rumour regarding an off-field scandal discussion you can report it via the Report Post button located at the bottom left of every post.

If you see an unsubstantiated rumour ABOUT YOU you can contact BIG to ask for removal. Or get your lawyer to do it. They might listen or they might not. It's a case-by-case thing and has been taken out of the hands of Mods and Admins, including myself.

What this doesn't mean:

That people should feel free to try to start hurtful, harassing or vicious rumours about defenceless and vulnerable people for the pure enjoyment of it. It's a nasty thing to do.

That we believe that every rumour outside this board is true.

That people can report as unsubstantiated rumours any post containing mild speculation, on things like draft trades or team lists that don't include your favourite player, and expect that post to be moved to this board.

splutter How can you get away with this??

BIG is a US company and as such is subject to US law. Happily, the Americans love their freedom of speech.

The Communications Decency Act section 230 specifically removes liability for material published by members of sites like this from the owner of the site. We'd like to see this sort of legislation all round the world.

This helps us reduce censorship and removal of material. It's not open slather but we'll mainly be leaving to their own devices the dimwits who want to publish rumours or fuel the fire of off-field scandals.

We suggest people who aren't interested in this sort of thing not visit this board.

What are the rules?

Normal site rules and BIG Terms of Service apply.

What's this US law?

For those interested:

(c) Protection for “Good Samaritan” blocking and screening of offensive material

(1) Treatment of publisher or speaker

No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.

(2) Civil liability

No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be held liable on account of—

(A) any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected; or

(B) any action taken to enable or make available to information content providers or others the technical means to restrict access to material described in paragraph (1).

BIG is the provider of the interactive computer service.

Site members are the information providers: the publishers of the information they post and liable for the consequences.

Rumours and scandals. That's what this board is about.

And that doesn't mean using this board to publish speculative theories you've invented and the like.

Or using it for predictions.

We'll be cracking down on the obvious BS, so be warned.

A few people would do very well to keep the bolded in mind.

It's very easy to invent half baked theories out of thin air and explain them away as rumours, or whispers.

When it's the same repeat offenders who keep popping up with these 'rumours' and 'whispers', then scepticism creeps in.

A note on posting unsubstantiated rumors of illegal/immoral activities by public identities

We see threads started from time to time with allegations of players being involved in either illegal or immoral acts. Whilst this sub board intends to provide a place for discussion, it is not open slather to name public identities (AFL or otherwise) and make unfounded allegations which could be seen to damage the reputation of parties involved.

BigFooty and its operator reserve the right to remove any material for the smooth operation of the platform.
