After viewing todays match, Im drooling over ANY chance of watching my beloved Magpies playing on the last day of September. We arent too far off, hopefully.

As for the immediate future.
I watched a couple of players and made a few realisations. Some people have mentioned the likes of Rowan Jones, Chad Fletcher and those sorts of players (Good players outdone by Stars) to come and add some pace to the Collingwood midfield but I realised, we always say the likes of Tarrant, Lockyer ect would be better players in such teams (When Collingwood fires, Tarks, Taz, Lonie, ect look really good). So I did the reverse and realised, thats how these players would probably be at Collingwood. I saw the way Jones played today, he would REALLY struggle at Collingwood. I think that Lockyer, at the Eagles, would be a better player. So our aim shouldnt be for the good players that are in top teams but cant make it through. We should either worry about our own crop (keep Taz) or only deal with top class players.

Finally, after REALLY watching his game for the first time, Ive come to the conclusion that Daniel Kerr is my #1 favourite player in the AFL. He should be #2 on our shopping list, following a quality back-up to Josh. You have your class like Judd, Goodes, Cousins, Dal Santo ect but Kerr seems like the complete package to me. He is also very underated in the courage department. He was going at Hall today!! Courage at the ball and at the player. And did anyone also witness that run down the wing towards the 50 in the last quarter? We all know he has confidence in himself, but the sheer determination he showed in just trying to attack is the type of player I want at Collingwood. I dont think we have any players with that kind of class who back themselves. I really hope we manage to get someone as good as Daniel Kerr, if we dont at least try getting HIM.

Anyway, this thread is just a general topic and opinion on 2007 and the lead up to 2007. Add what you believe needs to be done.

It would take other teams such as West Coast, Adelaide and Fremantle to be off their game and/or "sidelined" for us to win the flag.
I suspect we will be around the mark, but also continue to persevere with the kids.

I agree with you that we should be trying to go a quality top line midfielder like Kerr, but the problem is that he probably will not want to leave in the quest for future premiership glory and that the price upon his head will be enormous. I think, the best way to go forward is to invest and develop our youth, i.e. thomas, pendles, pick 10 etc.

With regards to Tarrant, i dont think we should trade him because he is critical to our structure and posting any sort of charge. Just like the situation Fevola was in last year, Tarrant could really turn it on next year. I dont think the problem was entirely with Tarrant as our forward line struggled to fire a shot in the second half of 2005. It is essential that we get a really good full time forward coach to replace Carey and help these guys

after today's match i don't think our midfield is slow anymore, i think they are rubbish now, need to work on midfield, get a ruckman and speedy mids IMO

Ill have to disagree with you Coin_Toss, as I believe that it would only take us bringing our 'A' game for us to succeed against these teams. Just look at the Subi match against the WCE earlier this year. Without our captain, a back-up ruckman and a fast midfield, yet we took it to the end with this year and to a lesser extent, last years best side in the AFL. We did a sensational job against the Crows at AAMI and I do not, what so ever, believe Freo are in the same category. I believe, it is US, at OUR best, that every side in the AFL has to watch out for, especially if we get ourselves a ruckman and a quality pacey midfielder.

Agreed.
I realised that it wasnt entirely Tarrant, it was more the structure. MM did not structure our forward line to benefit the likes of Tarrant or Rocca. And the slow use of the ball from the midfield later on in the season would've even caused headaches for a forward line like Sydney, WCE and Adelaide. Holding up the ball as opposition players filled our forward line CRUCIFIED Rocca, Tarrant and co. in the 50.

Thats not a very fair statment in my eyes. As I believe that ANY top 8 midfield, ON ITS DAY, is a good one. The reason we didnt do so well last 2 years, was due to injury, but also because we didnt have players stand up in the midfield. In 2002/2003, we had the likes of Steinfort, O'Bree, Licuria Betharas and Burns assisting Bucks. What got us into the finals this year, instead of an improvment to 9th or 10th was the hardness/clearances of Burns, O'Bree, Buckley, Holland and the run of Johnson, Swan, Lonie.
Our midfield is FAR from rubbish, we wouldnt have finished in the top 8/contended for top 4 without the midfield we have.

Another thing is, the midfield we have now, is pretty much the future of Collingwood. The older hands are drifting off, but the likes of Swan, Johnson, Lonie (Yes, Lonie is a VERY important player in the midfield for our future), Shaw are the future.

Tarrant needs mor space to run and mark, they are his main assests, if he is fit he is quick off the line, so open up the forward line with rusling and tarrant. I would try keeping Rocca up at CHF mabye and see how that goes.

I would love Chad Fletcher. I heard rumours about this Rose kid from the eagles involved in a Tarrant trade, not bad stats for the year. Look him up!

Rosa gets a lot of the footy but his disposal was lacking at times, Fletcher's stats match up almost identically with Licuria's, don't really want Fletcher in a Collingwood jumper while we still have Licuria who is a valuable part of our team.
