What's up with the backline this year?

Most of that synergy last year was on the back of relatively no significant long term injuries. That is so different this year.
Minus CGuthrie, Stanley, JHenry, Rohan, Blicavs (Selwood)is a lot of best and fairest talent that is simply irreplaceable.
The absentees have been with us all year.
Has there been a single game where we had 20 of last year's GF 22 on the ground together? Maybe rd 1. And we looked nice for a half in that game.

Straight up there's no Selwood, so we would need to be missing no more than 2 premiership players in a single round, when factoring in Parfitt as sub last year

Round 1 vs Collingwood - no Duncan, Henry & Kolodjashnij
Round 2 vs Carlton - no Stewart, Henry, Kolodjashnij, Duncan & Parfitt
Round 3 vs GC - no Duncan, Henry, Kolodjashnij, Stanley & Parfitt
Round 4 vs Hawthorn - no Henry, SDK & Parfitt
Round 5 vs WCE - no Henry, Bews & Rohan
Round 6 vs Sydney - no Henry, Stanley, Stengle & Parfitt
Round 7 vs Essendon - no Henry, Stanley, Stengle, C. Guthrie, Tuohy & Parfitt
Round 8 vs Adelaide - no Henry, Stanley, Stengle, C. Guthrie, Rohan, SDK & Parfitt
Round 9 vs Richmond - no Henry, Stanley, Stengle, C. Guthrie, Rohan, SDK, Dangerfield & Close
Round 10 vs Fremantle - no Stanley, C. Guthrie, Rohan, SDK, Dangerfield & Duncan
Round 11 vs GWS - no Stanley, C. Guthrie, Rohan, Dangerfield & Duncan
Round 12 vs Bulldogs - no Stanley, C. Guthrie, Dangerfield, Duncan & Parfitt
Round 13 - N/A
Round 14 vs Port Adelaide- no Stanley, C. Guthrie & Parfitt
Round 15 vs Melbourne - no C. Guthrie, Parfitt & Dangerfield
Round 16 vs Sydney - no C. Guthrie, Parfitt, Cameron & O'Connor
Round 17 vs North - no C. Guthrie, Parfitt, Cameron, Bews, Kolodjashnij & Smith
Round 18 vs Essendon - no C. Guthrie, Parfitt, Bews & Tuohy
Round 19 vs Brisbane - no C. Guthrie, Parfitt, Bews & Rohan
Round 20 vs Fremantle - no C. Guthrie, Parfitt & Bews
Round 21 vs Port Adelaide - no C. Guthrie, Bews, Hawkins & Blicavs
Round 22 vs Collingwood - no C. Guthrie, Bews, Hawkins, Blicavs & Henry
Round 23 vs St Kilda - no C. Guthrie, Blicavs, Henry, Stanley & Rohan. Parfitt?
Round 24 vs Bulldogs - no Henry... C. Guthrie, Blicavs, Stanley, Rohan & Parfitt all ??

Based on that, at most we've had 19 premiership players in the seniors and that's only been on 6 occasions

That is awesome. Thanks for the effort.

No worries, I don't mind looking at these sort of things and when you start to see it listed who was missing from the premiership team you get an idea of the quality of players missing

And while not a premiership player, another one who's not made a senior appearance this year is Menegola who has 116 senior games under his belt - while it now appears he's on the outer in terms of senior selection, can't help thinking if he was available in the first half dozen rounds, that he would have played a number of senior games this year

Exactly- it confirms what we felt all year, week after week. You won't get the commentators telling us that.

Its a product of a successful side, always been able to just play an attacking minded zone without ever really getting exposed consistently, now the ball is streaming out of the midfield on regularity the opposition is picking those gaps in our defensive structure.

Think as we become a weaker side its got to progressively move more and more away from a zone otherwise we are going to regularly get pumped.

Not sure about that. Our injury list was a discussion point all season long.

It was far from ideal but we also lost games - especially the first three rounds - when we had very strong teams. It also doesn't factor in the injuries to other teams when they faced us. As that list shows we lost to both GWS and Fremantle at Geelong with minimal players missing. Both those teams also had injuries to critical players in those games. Injuries were one of the factors, but they were far from being the only factor.

The single biggest observation from this season I can think of - from watching live at least six separate games - is how often we were stationary, how often we were simply outworked, and the total lack of run compared to the opposition. That was there in Round 2 and it was there last night. Can't just pin that on injuries.
