The Gold Coast situation couldn't hurt either - he may be facing a move interstate even if he stays at the Roos. He's a WA boy originally so may prefer that to heading north?

Until then, Micale is about the best offer so far IMO.
Do you think that is at all realistic? Would he actually be considered? Personally I have no opinion of him as a potential AFL senior coach, but have enormous respect for wht he has achieved.
Certainly if it happened it would want to come off, because we would think that the ridicule we get at the moment was mild compared to what we would cop if Micale failed.

I dunno Gav. Given that we are unlikely to entice Leigh Matthews over (aaahhh but no harm in indulging in a bit of wishful thinking....
), then it's stating the obvious to say we need to be very careful in selecting a new coach. Of course I'm not sure that Micale would work either, but he comes across as very knowledgeable and astute, he speaks well and appears to be a good communicator - and he has a decent relationship with the media, and I think there's no doubt he is respected. And if the "powers that be" are intent on injecting some Freo into Freo, then I would much rather Tony Micale than Peter Sumich. I don't know the extent of the "mentoring" that he provided to Worsfold, but given that Worsfold is an intelligent person you'd think he wouldn't instal an "older" ex-WAFL coach who couldn't give him something extra with his experience gained over many years. It's a gut feel thing more than anything really.
Other than that, I don't know. Like chook said - what constitutes "being Freo" and what consitutes "not being Freo"? We have two former captains of our club working as assistants under two respected coaches in Melbourne - Chris Bond with Eade, and Adrian Fletcher with Malthouse. Would they be candidates, and if so - are they any good? Would they make "good coaches"? Are they "as Freo as Sumich"???

I think I could handle Suma if he was selected on merit. The addition of Slappovich is just too horrible to think about.
If CC goes (I think he should as something is not right and must be changed even if not entirely his fault) what about Mark Harvey. He would have learnt alot from Sheeds and the Essendon machine and is the sort of coach (and ex player) that commands respect from youngsters. He is in our system at the moment but I am sure he is not able to exert his personality on the whole coaching team that he would be able to as head honcho. I would give him a shot over most of the other untried assistants.
Laidley is another I am warming to. His players called him "The Bible" a few years back as they didn't know how to read him. Let assistants deal with the tactics and whiteboard shuffling. You need the coach to make sure the players will not return to the sheds after a game without giving their all. I think a few weak links in our team don't do this.

Laidley is a bogan from Balga - he wouldn't know what to do with lots of $$ and good facilities. Give him a second hand trackie, a voucher to Norm Wrightson's to get himself spruced up, and a gym with threadbare paisley carpet, paint peeling off the walls and holes in the floor - then he might do a reasonable job for us.
Until then, Micale is about the best offer so far IMO.
I would prefer laidley to Micale even, I love the mongrel in the man. And we would not have to argue with bloody souths easts
