Which is exactly why the AFL should not be in charge of looking after the game itself, just their league. A National trust should be looking after the game and its rules and all leagues should be playing to those rules.

I agree. The AFL change their rules based on business, profit, and entertainment value (among other things). While this might be relevant to the National league, it isn't relevant to grass roots football, who actually have the better product. I think grass roots football is commonsense, and basic. It is just football as it should be played. It would be a shame to see many of the idiotic rules the AFL implements - trickle down to the grass roots level. A National Trust does make sense, as the AFL do not have a mortgage on the game of Australian Rules (at least they shouldn't).
