I was wondering what's everyones favourite Stadium and why?
I like the MCG because of its size and its history, I remember going to a Richmond-Carlton match with 80,000 people in 1995 and the crowd and the atmosphere was great

and the SCG especially during big Swans crowds when the crowd is right into the game and the Sydney chant goes up, and the one-day internationals

I went to Stadium Australia a couple of times during the Olympics and that was a great stadium though one weird thing about Stadium Australia is that it looks huge from the outside but doesn't seem as big as its capacity suggests when you're there, but maybe that's just me

The G all the way!!!!!!!! Has the most amazing atmosphere, I have been there when there's like 90,000 people, and also as few as 10,000 people, and it still has amazing atmosphere!!!!!!! Love it, best place to see the footy. I also like Football Park, it's a really nice ground, a different feel to it for sure.

MCG, closely followed by Colonial.

I have, however, been to the SCG on one occasion. The atmosphee at the SCG is greater than the atmosphere at any other Australian venue. It is simply awesome.

The best stadium is the MCG, without a doubt, nothing better than a close game in front of a big crowd to become a showcase of AFL.

I too have seen Sydney in all its glory, in fact I was there when it set its record attendance of 46,000 in round 22 1997. Geelong won by 10 points by the way.

Although I thought it was a bit small to host footy matches.

Give me the G anyday

Haven't been to the SCG or MCG since 1982, so it's a little hard to comment! Even then I slept through both games (finals I think), waking up each time a goal was kicked. So... I can only say Subi. Better than the WACA, and more like a stadium than a paddock now we've got screens and the new stands.

Next time I'm there, finally getting all the grounds will be of top priority (except Optus).

From a TV point of view, I like the atmosphere at the GABBA. I've never heard a chant so audibly as when "Car-ey's a Wank-er" went round the ground. Think the ump also copped it that night. Top Stuff.

I haven't been to Colonial yet or ever to Subiaco and I haven't been to the Gabba since the old Greyhound track days so I can't really say anything about these.

But the best just has to be the SCG, you can't beat it for closeness to the action, great viewing and a simply sensational atomsphere, also the facilities are very good and on most match days the weather is brilliant too.

The only thing that isn't so great is the gound is perhaps 10m too short.

Best thing of all - I live across the road from it !!!

I'll watch footy anywhere, any time.

I like the MCG most usually, although on a wet, freezing Friday night there is nothing better than Colonial.

Hell, I even used to not mind Princes Park (back when it was the only place where you could buy beer in cans at the footy - including Carlton Draught AND Fosters). I only started hating the place when they were making Richmond supporters pay to sit in a grandstand at what was supposedly a Richmond home game thereby subsidising Carlton. Richmond should never have had to play a home ground at the home of its natural enemy!!

I went to Waverly a couple of times this year, and I think it will be sorely missed. What a waste!!

Anyway, I still remember going to the Western Oval and sitting at the opposite side to the Members wing, where the roar of the Tiger faithfull would shake the shed-like enclosure so hard it felt like the thing would fall on our heads. I can also remember imagining that the Footscray fans would be hoping that that was precisely what would happen.

Ah, Glory days...

Colonial Stadium is great, obviously Footy Park, being the home of that back-to-back team, is high up there, then Sydney is pretty good too.

Optus Oval was the worst place I've ever been too, and I thought the MCG was overated. Subiaco was ok, but we lost, so I guess that influences one's enjoyment.

As for basketball, the Clipsal Powerhouse would have to be the best in the Southern Hemisphere, lol.

Adelaide Oval also comes highly rated.

Nothing better than the G'. Especially with a packed house. Grand Final this year was just unbelievable, probably because we won. But games against Collingwood, Carlton and Richmond just can't be taken for granted, with regards to the atmosphere. No other stadium can encapsulate such a sensation.

Colonial is second. Atmosphere is right on top of me and player's are audible. Seat is secon row in forward pocket at Locker room end...so that probably helps.

Used to love Windy Hill.

I'd prefer going anywhere ahead of Waverley - give me Optus Oval or Shell Stadium anyday. Of course, the G is king, and Colonial is also pretty good - from a spectator point of view anyway!

Things I hated about Waverley were:

Travel Time

I actually live in the SE suburbs of Melbourne, only a 15 minute drive from Waverley. That is, 15 minutes in off peak driving. Getting home from a game there is a different matter. After a game with a reasonable crowd (say 40,000), It would take at least an hour to get out of the carpark, and another 15 mins to get on the freeway. This is 1.5 hours in total.

From the G, it's a lazy walk down to Richmond station, onto the Frankston train and home within the hour. From Colonial, it is straight of the stadium and onto the Spencer Street station. A trip of just over an hour.

Viewing

On a typical rainy Waverley day, sitting under cover in the top deck, the nearest boundary line is at least 50 metres away. The far one must be close to 200 metres away.

I actually bought a Walkman with the express purpose of taking it to Waverley, so I could find out what was happening on the other side of the ground.

Weather

I've always wondered how the grass got green at Waverley. I'm sure the sun never shone there!

Winning

Something that we rarely ever did there. So often going home feeling wet and miserable, after a wet and miserable day.

All I can say is good riddance.

This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

While we're on stadiums. I notice that Wembley got a 'nice' official send-off before it is bulldozed. Shame the AFL didn't have the guts to do the same with waverley.

And before anyone stats wembly was all that waverley was - stuck in the suburbs - poor public transport - seats a long way from the action (behind a running track) and the closure has been controversial. Granted Wembley has been around for 70 rather than 30 years.

As for colonial - if it's a small crowd - shut the top deck and squeeze everyone in - thats what happened at the Hawks-Freo game - save money and get a better atmosphere.

It does help when you are winning. I notice Hawthorn has the third best win/loss ratio there this year (after the swans and essendon)

JUB JUB, you're a Geelong supporter like myself, but how can you possibly put the RJ Hickey stand in your favourite parts of grounds. If you are lucky enough to get undercover, you have to contend with Big Fat Women taking your seat, or old farts who won't move, speak or get excited about anything. And then if you are lucky enough to get a decent seat, YOU'VE GOT POLES IN YOUR FACE ALL DAY. Give me the outer wing, anyday.

At least you get some sun there, not like the Brownlow where you FREEZE your arse off all day.

Pess, just think about all those Hawthorn supporters who said they would never go to Colonial, they've missed out on some pretty good matches.

Actually, speaking of Hawthorn at Colonial, ran into some Hawthorn supporters at the final earlier this year, who were saying that they would never ever have gone to the ground, only the fact that it was a final got them there. This hawthorn woman couldn't get over how GOOD it was and said it was so much better than Waverley, it wasn't funny. Based on that experience, I reckon that Hawthorn will get a lot more supporters to Colonial Next year than they did this year.

The "G" definitely my favourite.
I have only been to Colonial once, but I must say I found it fantastic for watching footy.
The best thing about these 2 is, they are so easy to get to by public transport, so the car can stay at home.
Stadium I hate is Subi, too many bloody weagle supporters go there. Heh Heh.

I'd have to say the MCG, with no ground coming close! I've only been to 2 matches at the MCG but both times the atmosphere and stadium was just awsome to be in.

For non West Australians who have visited Subiaco Oval, what do you think of it? Have you been back since they built the T&C Stand and added the 2 scoreboards?
