I've started to notice a lot of my regular brands disappearing from my local Coles to be replaced with shelf after shelf of Coles brand crap. Been happening for a while but seems to be accelerating. Makes me very mad.

How can you be supporting small business if you're in Coles or Woolworths ripping them off?

I've noticed this is very demographic and geographically based.

The shopping centre across from uni is full of Coles brand labels. But you go to one in a white collar suburb, and you'll see a lot less of the generic Coles stuff.

It is pretty much, unfortunately, the consumers fault. People are price-driven. Personally, I'd prefer to pay more for better product, but that is simply not the case with the majority of Australians.
Had some woman come in and complain about the price of carrots at a high-end supermarket the other day. For some reason people choose to ignore "you get what you pay for" when it comes to food.

I haven't been to Safeway/Coles for a long time.

Been going to the markets and delis lately - much cheaper and the range is fresh and wholesome.
