It's more then just a coincidence that every week the teams we play have poor goal kicking records due to our defenders ability to push people into harder angles to kick goals from and the general defensive pressure meaning there's never an easy kick at goal?

I mean first PAPS, then Sydney and now Freo supporters are whinging about how much they whould of smashed us if they could kick straight. When will they work it out?

There were plenty of misses due to pressure, but Pav should have nailed his 2 like normal, Carr was open goal bound and missed and then Headland did a similar thing at the other end under no pressure.

Rutten's man on the mark routine claims another victim.
Pressure builds percieved pressure. The Carr one was an excellent example. He looked over both shoulders before taking the shot, rather than using the time he had to slow, steady and shoot.

Nice to know some else has picked up on too - I have also noticed that a couple other backman have started to try the same little routine as well - imitation the sincerest form of flattery.

Frawley at the end of the telecast nominated that Rutten and Bassett are the two premier defenders in the competition and Craig said that Rutten's game was exceptional.

I don't think it is just the angles they are on and the physical pressure they are under that is causing them to miss. The fact that our matches have been low scoring (especially the last 2 weeks) means that the opposition forwards don't get many 'sighters' at the beginning of a match to find their range. Take Fevola's 8 goal effort against Essendon. He kicked poorly in the first half, got his 'kicking boot on' after half time and finished with 8 goals. Against the Crows you pretty much have to nail your first/second shot at goal because they are the only ones you are going to get.

I think some of our forward have suffered in the same way in these low scoring encounters.

You guys are absolutely correct. The main reason for the amount of behinds was defensive pressure, not necessarily poor execution of skills. If you are snapping the ball across the body with someone on your hammer a point is the most likely result.

Both teams missed opportunities today.

Totally agree. As a Freo member at the game I thought that your defensive pressure on our forwards was the reason we could not kick straight. Was nothing to do with the Freo players (except Pavs couple of mis kicks).

With your best side you will be hard to beat on smaller grounds.

I agree to an extent. Sydney's poor kicking did cost them dearly last week though.

Port and Freo's inaccuracy was largely from our good play.

I hate those statements from supporters and coaches - "if those points were goals instead we would have won"

If one of those points was a goal instead, then the game goes back to the centre and it turns into a completely different game. The play that resulted in the other points would not have occured, they may not kick another goal, we may kick one in response, they may kick more goals. It's a stupid statement and has no basis in the reality of the game of aussie rules football.

Finally someone who agrees with me on this. When i tell this to certain people they look at me like im an idiot. If one of the points was a goal the result of the game could have changed by 50 points as it could trigger a totally different game of footy from then onwards.

Maybe we are just more accustomed to this issue than fans of other teams because we had to endure that very problem ourselves throughout Ayres' entire reign. So often we would have more scoring shots and lose. We'd dominate our opponents with the number entries into the forward fifty. We were notoriously inefficient. Craig deserves credit for being able to turn that around and to also force the opposition into that same trap.
