Part 2 of this thread is here:

Agree on our inability to develop players. Most other clubs seem to be able to work their first and 2nd round picks into very decent AFL players fairly consistently - outside of ready made freaks like Walsh or Weitering we just seem incapable of that over the last decade.

Reckon Casboult is a good, concrete example of it. Love big Levi and watching him play, but gee whiz, how the guy still had the ball drop he did after 5 years on an AFL list was mind blowing. Know he's improved the last few years but still more susceptible than most to the odd shank ala his first kick last night.

Casboult has an ongoing knee issue and can hardly train. Should not be playing. Helps no one

Oscar McDonald at least showed effort.

Honestly embarrassing he didn't get selected based on performance. Match committee only sees names and not performance it seems

Thats a lot of bad luck mixed with a few bad list decisions, most of it outside your control unfortunely.

I think our general plight is definitely the clubs fault. So much poor management from the salary cap debacle to recruitment and lost management performance to coaching and player development. We have had bad luck, too.

I was more highlighting just how miserable a run it has been for fans - 8 years where the most memorable and untainted moment was Newnes’ kick after the siren last year, where we have literally been hopeless (as in - season over by round 4). And then a 20 year run where almost every key player finished up in a way that taints the memory.

other teams have had extended poor runs in my lifetime but this is just bleak. Even the Gold Coast have had some frisky 3-1 starts to the season. If you go back to the 2013 elimination win , since then has to be one of the most miserable runs a club has experienced...

This 100%
Couldn’t believe it at the time and now looking back seems even more ludicrous.

the momentum and pressure tosack him was immense at the time.

the decision to hire Malthouse was what gutted the club. Everything stems from that moment really. He openly despised a bunch of the players and seemed to really have been persuaded to do it for the money. Had he thrown a Molotov cocktail through the doors ofPrinces Park it would have done less damage

If Teague does go does that mean LoGiudice goes? I feel like he tied his tenure to Teague somehow?

Some comment he made or am I imagining it?

I couldn't tell you when they will, so many times the media continues to pump them up as playing finals every single year and every single year I call bullshit on it, and every year so far I've been right. They won't play finals this year, guarantee it.

Ive always believed in SOS strategy but thought he’s made too many errors in picking up the wrong blokes.

Apart from the consensus picks at 1, there’s been a litany of first round mistakes. And plenty of fools gold retreads that at the time Carlton fans lapped up thinking he had fooled the rest of the AFL world with his trading nous.

Hopefully the new list management team do a better job. I’m a little dubious, given the enormous contract they gave Williams and the top ten draft pick they ponied up for Saad.

They have a heap of kids they should be getting good returns from now that just haven’t kicked on.

Sacking the coach (again) may not be identifying the underlying issue.

This honestly seems like a straw man to me. Did the media pump up Carlton?

Here’s the AFL.com.au season preview. only 1/8 media people predicted Carlton would make the 8 https://www.afl.com.au/news/560486/crystal-ball-our-predictions-for-the-2021-afl-season-are-in

Here is the age preview. Again, 1/7 analysts tipped Carlton to make the 8

in the 8 preview they had a readers poll and the reader average was 9th. It’s probably fair to say the football public rated Carlton more highly than the media/experts did preseason.

They have run out of excuses number 1 picks, countless first rounds, trading for players different coaches etc .Maybe a Clarkson is the answer.SOS made alot of poor decisions to along with the board.

Where was the pressure from I mean winning 11 games in his last year is hardly a terrible season buy any stretch ?

Carlton was the AFL/VFL team I followed before the Crows came in. (Many SA boys in there at the time). I'd like to see them win a flag when Crows are not in contention (this year), but I can't see it happening anytime soon. Not sure what's going on there, they seem to have a decent list.
The same could probably be said for Richmond a few years ago but we've seen how that's turned around.

What game are you watching and through what goggles ??

He has been a massive liability since returning from the knee reco's.
Have some bloody patience. Usually takes at least 12 months to get back their best... he’s had two ACL’s right? He’ll come good.

The loss of Charlie Curnow is/has been pretty big too, and kind of goes under the radar.
No idea why you guys were targeting Oliver when Tom MacDonald was being given away. Two MacDonalds + one MacKay would easily replace Charlie Curnow, potential best forward line in AFL IMO.

Since 2010, teams that start 0-2 only make the finals 8.6% of the time. Its a sound indication.
So Brisbane or Geelong are going to be in a fair amount of trouble then.

Dogs made the finals last year after staring 0-2 and Collingwood made the GF after staring 0-2 in 2018
