Part 2 of this thread is here:

I would think the coaches input on who to recruit, who to retain and who they need as support; should be in place prior to the trade period…. This isn’t going to happen.

The trade period doesn’t start until late October.

That’ll give the incoming coach 2 or 3 weeks to review and provide their feedback, but trade targets and draft prospects are the domain of the list management team.

Wholesale changes aren’t typically made in a coaches first pre-season, and that’s by design. A senior coach wants a reasonable period of oversight and can’t adjust too much without at least 12 months in the role, getting to know the players and properly assessing if they want to keep them around.

Yeah that’s the point we were horrible and Carlton are still the laughing stock of the league
So the football bit which IS people's real job is less important than the CEO bit which ISN'T anyone's real job?

First thing Carlton has gotten right for a while is ******* off that dud Liddle

Can't believe he was in the role for as long as he was. Finally found out for being the fraud he has always been
Show us on this doll where...

Likewise.

You’re the one making the claims, can you substantiate any of them?

there is one for you sunshine.

" Carlton president Luke Sayers had secret talks with Ross Lyon in the past two months as the club considered David Teague’s coaching future. "

or the fact that the CEO was on the panel. And he has now been sacked on the back of a damning internal report. Which was commissioned and delivered before the panel was setup.

How about you think through what has happened logically and stop posting your childish "omg tin foil hat" bollocks? Grow up.

Liddle: Sack me or back me
Board: You're sacked
Refresh: The place lacks transparency

??

Board: Liddle you are on the committee to appoint a coach
Liddle: OK
Board: We are looking for a CEO replacement.
Liddle: But you have just appointed me to the coach committee. Back me or sack me then
Board: OK we sack you
La Dispute: Everything is good

??

How did you know I’m former failed Freo forward (say that three times quickly) Cam McCarthy?

So your entire sequences of events is based on a couple of off the cuff discussions with Sayers and Ross, during what is almost certainly a vetting process.

Also makes you wonder how many ‘public talks’ take place between potential candidates and their prospective employers.

You’re naive, I’ll give you that.

I would have thought the best way to get Clarkson would be to entice Mark Evans to leave Gold Coast and install him as CEO or head of footy operations as a matter of urgency. It'll be like getting the band back together again.

There is no challenge for Evans at the Suns as he is basically spending the AFL's money the whole time, and the Blues are a challenge indeed.

Evans has done his time at the Suns, and could be attainable with the right opportunity, whether that be back at AFL HQ or club land back in Victoria.

Maybe look at it like

Carlton: "Let's see how things pan out with this panel, then we will talk"

Liddle: "NO! BACK ME NOW!"

Off the cuff discusions for 45 minutes around Ross looking at the role, followed by him appearing on Footy Classified even more smug than usual. Yup that sounds off the cuff to me.

its pretty obvious the plan was to hire Ross. That is why the process was never setup as it was unnecessary. Then obviously the board got spooked and pulled the plug on Ross so they had to hastily cobble together the process (and thus included people who were going to get canned). Amateur hour, classic mistakes causing more mistakes.
This seems to be the likely turn of events

The best way to get Clarko would have been to wait a year, if they really had their heart set on Clarko. He never had any intention of throwing away 900k for doing nothing.

Correct.

Ross doesn’t openly discuss the Carlton job unless he’s been given a heavy indication that he just has to turn up and accept the role.

That’d be the quickest coach appointment in league history.

Ross was happy to have the chat when he knew he was one of our preferred candidates, but cracked the sads when we he made him follow the due process to elect the head coach.

We dodged a major bullet here.

It will be interesting to see if we fall back into debt now that the mastermind Cain is gone.

I predict not. Dud CEO. He had no credible experience. Not his fault.
What exactly did he do wrong ? expose sos
maybe not be so bias

Liddle did a good job in his time at Carlton

Ohh and he is more geelong than Richmond so not exactly a 'Richmond Man'

Hired Teague while the season was still ongoing with no proper process for his appointment.

Undercut the list management team by giving Richmond fringe players tours of Princes Park.

Great sales guy, dud CEO.

Actually, i think you'll find Fremantle appointed Ross on the back of a short PowerPoint presentation (to him) and some contract negotiations.

Ross has a proven track record and you know what you are getting with him because he was a head coach for 13 years. Putting him through the same process as someone who has never coached before is quite frankly absurd.

Do you think they would have made Clarko go through an 8-week process to select the coach? there is your answer why Ross wouldn't have entertained that.

Completely different circumstances, Freo were poaching a contracted coach without his manager's knowledge. Subsequently hastened when discovering the get out clause. They had to sell themselves to Ross.

Ross is unemployed (coaching wise) and the onus is on him to satisfy the club and our vision. He obviously doesn't want to and likely waiting with bated breath that we pick up the phone and offer him the gig regardless.

I've addressed this a number of times in this thread.

You're not just selecting the best most credentialed coach, you're appointing a guy who is going to best fit in with your club and who is going to work best with your squad - there's no use just selecting the guy at the top of a hypothetical list. At that point you're just ticking boxes, and that is the exact kind of thinking that got Mick Malthouse hired to the Carlton Football Club.

It's not as though Ross didn't have question marks on him either. Still 0 premierships from 4 attempts, he also left both his former clubs in disarrayed and harassed a female member of staff at Freo. Pretty obvious why he needed some serious background work.

If Ross couldn't handle a comprehensive process, which involved some extensive reviews and discussions beyond his capability as a senior coach then he was never the right candidate in the first place.
