What exactly is in it for the VFL guys?

Different reasons I guess. Some have zero chance to play AFL and may enjoy the odd game of VFL but also want to play with their mates at local level. Some of the youngsters either are looking to boost their chances of AFL or in Conca's case gets to play VFL for the first time. Some guys may just want to be involved with an AFL club. Some are ex-Richmond who are coming back to play with mates.

What's in it for them? Greater status playing in the VFL, and for a big brand club like Richmond; they get paid, much better for instance than the pay guys would have got last year playing for Coburg; greater exposure, in the media, on the Richmond website, and in televised games; better facilities by playing and training at ME Bank centre; some, like Schibaci, get their only chance to play for the team they barrack for; having the chance, sometimes once again, to be connected to an AFL club

What exactly is in it for the VFL guys?

Very little, it is why you should probably expect to see 50%+ turnover every year. In most cases they will make less money, and not get picked most weeks - so it is tough to recruit and keep them.

Someone like Batsanis is still trying to get back into the AFL. His theory will be that he is a better chance under the noses of an AFL club, than at a stand-alone like Port Melbourne. He is young enough to still have a slim chance, and good enough to win a VFL best and fairst and represent the VFL.

Nick Wynne has been a dominant VAFA player for a few years, so it is now or never if he wants a shot at the AFL. The benefit for the VAFA guys is that they can keep playing locally, get a $4 or $5 thousand for 8 or 10 games. They are not forfeiting money like the Suburban / COuntry / Interstate guys would be. In most cases they will still play enough games to qualify for VAFA finals.

The 33yo Luke Collins has tended to be a fringe VFL player. But he is a phys-ed teacher at a high school. He might think pending time on the fringes on an AFL club looking at training techniques, nutrition etc is good professional development.

Pat Contin's day job is sports marketing. A higher profile and associations with AFL players is going to help him sell golf equipment. Perhaps RFC will run a 'free' add in a publication or two with his smiling face on it?

The other players to target as recruits are guys who have Personal Training businesses, coaching ambitions, are at Uni studying some kind of physio / human movment etc type course.
