Shane Savage, Pines, Mornington Peninsula Nepean

The former Hawthorn and St Kilda midfielder joins the Pythons as a playing-assistant coach, and ready to supercharge the midfield. Savage played 165 AFL games, including five seasons under the great Alistair Clarkson. “It’s a pretty impressive resume,” Pines coach Paddy Swayn said.

Tom Schneider, Traralgon, Gippsland

In local football, midfielders don’t came much better than tenacious Tom, a much-decorated player at Vermont, where he counted Traralgon coach Jake Best and fellow ace recruit Brett Eddy as teammates. Recruited from Oakleigh Chargers, Schneider was at Hawthorn in 2011-12 and as a rookie was Box Hill’s club champion in 2012. In powerful sides at Vermont he won the best-and-fairest in 2013, 2016 and 2018.

Tyrone Vickery, Springvale Districts, Southern

By name and by stature the 200cm, 100kg former Tiger and Hawk is one of the biggest recruits to hit the Southern league in some time. And he’ll strip as one of the fittest players at the club as the Demons make the jump to Division 1. At 31 he brings the benefit of 125 AFL matches, 119 for Richmond and six with Hawthorn, to Newcomen Rd, adding to a forward line packed with marking power. He can also be used in the ruck. “He’s keen to work with our young players and our key position players. He’s all in. He’s been great. He’s interested in our recruiting, interested in the club and our game plan,’’ Districts coach Kris Thompson said of Vickery.

Those 6 Vickery games are so burnt into my brain that it feels like he played 6 full seasons for us. I'm amazed it was only 6 games.

Former AFL players land Hawks Academy roles

By hawthornfc.com.au - 14 hrs ago

Former Hawk Brooksby has landed the position of Hawks Academy Manager while retired Adelaide star McKay has been named as the Hawks Academy Coach.

The duo will be working with father-son, father-daughter, Next Generation eligible and other identified players from the Hawthorn and Box Hill heartlands to develop the talent pipeline from local level through to the elite.

Brooksby spent the last two years on Hawthorn’s list after stints at Gold Coast and West Coast before that.

Throughout his AFL career he has spent time developing his sport administration skills which he will draw upon in leading Hawthorn’s academy space.

David McKay joins the Hawks after 248 games with the Adelaide Crows, returning to the state he grew up in with his wife and three children.

McKay will focus on coaching Hawthorn’s academy players while also playing a coaching role at Box Hill in the VFL program and contributing to the AFLW recruiting team.

Brooksby will start on 6 December 2021 and McKay will commence on 13 December 2021.

Keegan is going to be a very busy boy as he also returns to South Adelaide in the SANFL each weekend to suit up

Werribee has ended 2021 with a bang beating out a number of potential suitors for the prized signature of ex-Hawk Oliver Hanrahan.

Ollie signed up on 20th December and said he was very keen to get down to the club in the New Year, meet everyone and get to work. I think playing for a stand alone VFL club is the best move for Ollie and hope he trains with greater intensity to fulfil his potential.

At training in November a player told me Harry Pepper was going to train with Port Melbourne. On occasions Harry showed something so I really hope he has a great 2022 and can have another crack in the AFL.
