The captain and leaders are as responsible as the coach

In Sam Walker's Book, "The Captains Class" he determined that “The most crucial ingredient in a team that achieves and sustains historic greatness is the character of the player who leads it.” These leaders serve as models, teachers, and support to their teammates.

Cameron Smith immediately springs to mind. Would Craig Bellamy have had the success he has achieved without Cameron Smith
Would Clarkson have been as successful without Luke Hodge and the leadership group at Hawthorn
Would Matthews have achieved the threepeat without Voss as a captain.
A lot of time and effort seems to go into choosing the right coach but if the leaders of the club are not driving the standards, then success will not follow.
You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it.
Geary has his critics, but no question in my mind he is at least trying to drive the standards. He just needs support. The Billy Slater appointment on the surface seems like a peripheral appointment, but IMO fast tracking the next crop of quality leaders is as important as who coaches the team if we want sustained success.

Excellent point and excellent post.

Lyon got us close because he had buy in from the senior players on the highest calibre.

Richo doesn't have that. We don't really have that.

I think Slater is an inspired appointment. According to Billings, he's been a huge influence on him.

I think also that a coach needs to step in and set expectations from day one.

Matthews walked in and said this is how it's going to be. Not negotiable. As a legend of the game the players were in awe of him. Ross Lyon was the same.

Richo lacks those qualities IMO. His rep was as a developer, which involves a fair bit of nurturing.

So when a nurturer turns and gives you a serve, it sends a mixed signal IMO.

True! Especially when his nurturing is akin to an evil child care centre!

This is why if we were to go untried ( looking unlikely ) that Harves and Lenny automatically have that aura about them of which you speak!

Also a big fan of the Slater appointment and agree that whoever gets the gig should be given his head on how it's going to be
And the club importantly must stand firm in his corner and back him to the hilt!

It's the only way forward. All successful organisations get behind their appointment, knowing that anything less than a
United front is soon uncovered by any playing group and therefore factions emerge! This has happened all too often at this footy club
And if there is one lesson to be learned from all this mess is that the tail must no longer wag the dog ever again at the StKilda football club!

Re Geary, Of course he is, and he has many admirable qualities. But he is who he is, like Richo. Both hard working, consistent, unsophisticated not particularly smart but experienced. And like Richo, a reasonable and approachable bloke.

I agree on Slater too, and I'd really like to see how he's been earning his keep during this downward slump. One of the key appointments in the off season.

The only problem with giving the coach his head and allowing him to adopt the "highway or my way" approach is that it has to be 100% the right guy. Think watters, neeld, mc Carthy etc that set clubs back years. Can only be a clarko, lyon, type status to go down that path

This is why the appointment is so crucial!
We can not afford to f*ck it up again! We must pick the right guy this time!
Which is why rumours of a done deal for the very ordinary Scott worry me greatly as from what i can see
He is just the type of divisive figure you speak of!

Watters and Neeld were just way out of their depth and never had the aura to be pulling that sh!t in the first place
And i'd argue about how much Mccartney set the dogs back, seeing as they won a flag within 2-3 years! But agree obviously it has to be
A sane and rational approach to laying down how it is to be! From memory Blight tried the same thing only in his case it's hard getting players
To jump through the fire for you when you as coach are barely there and on the course!

Which is why my way or the highway only works for proven coaches, not rookies.

When the boots where being stuck into THE North coach , did anyone here from Bomber , Waite or Petrie / however has anyone heard from Riewoldt or Montagna about Richardson.

Seem's to me the Nth coach handled the retiring players a bit better and sometimes those feelings can still be held at the club through friendships.

Anyway it should have no effect on how badly our team is playing , it should only effect how many knifes are being driven into the back of the coach when the team doesn't perform.
Scotty rigidly backed his players on every occasion and publicly shouldered the responsibility for the failures. It makes a difference.

So are we planning on dragging Blighty off the golf course again?
That's Super!

We already know he doesn't give a Ratts Tossbag!
Just checked with Ratten.

He doesn’t give a Blightys Tossbag.

All square

So I think we can take it as a given that Richardson will not be coach in 2020?

If so, how should the club handle it? There are at least 3 clubs looking for a coach - Roos, Blues, Saints. Saints are also looking to attract a free agent (who will want to know who is going to be coach).

If the decision is made - and most think it is - should we pull the pin now and openly get in the market for a coach and try and have the position filled by October? Or do we wait - risk Roos and Blues swooping and potential uncertainty through the trade period.

If the decision is made I cannot see any reason to continue with Richo for rest of season. Hand over to rats and see what he can do in the last 9 games - at least we get something out of them.

You considered Slater a "key" appointment? He's what?? a specialist tackling/motivation guy?

Dew seems to be doing it well but most are choosing the highway.

Not sure any decision has been made.

Where we are at , well we want to see how many more games we can win.
Look at Acres and see if he is worth keeping
See if Gresham can develop his midfield work
Look at Hunter Clark and Coffield and see if they are developing
Check Parker and Long and see if they can get more into the game.
Determine if Carlisle and Hannebery can get back to there best
Confirm Billings can become the elite player we have hoping for.
Get more games into Marshall , Battle , Wilkie , Hind and Paton.
See if Steele can get back to better form.
Try to get White and Langlands a game before the end of the year.
And at the end of the year work out who we are going to get rid of.

So but for seeing if we can get Parker more into the game, more games for Hind and Marshall and Hannebury can get back to his best, we are in the same place as the start of 2018?
