Bit of discussion about what $$$ Robbo is on at Morningside. Figure floated is $1000 a game, plus an assistant coaching gig, so some of his money is counted outside the cap.

Putting that in to perspective, further discussion mentioned that’s paying 1 player a quarter of the QAFL salary cap.

Made me wonder what our VFL top up players are on?

And how we divvy up our VFL cap.

Is Wylie Buzza on some sort of marquee signing money, and the rest on a set game day amount.

So essentially, outside of being on an AFL team list, there's virtually zero money in this sport, it's pocket money.

Well you don’t have to declare money at QAFL level as income, as it’s regarded as a hobby, so it’s tax free.

I barely know what goes on at the lower levels.

There’s some talk that there’s decent money to be made playing country football in Victoria, but we’re still not talking quite your day job type money.

Also, a couple of the QAFL coaches do it for free according to discussions on the QAFL board.

Money almost always flows up in sport. All those players at QAFL level and lower leagues still pay registration fees, part of which will end up in the AFL coffers.

Depends. If the club pays you cash, you should be okay
I had to declare my footy income way back in the early 1970's. However, after expenses etc it was basically not taxable anyhow
The important issue is it is additional income that makes up your total income for the year. Like all Australians the first $18,200 is tax free
The club i played for was the first in Brisbane to pay all players per games played
Most clubs at that time just paid the captain coach and a few other players they deemed warranted payment. Usually someone from Victoria

An article from 2017.

'Cash' payments require no reporting on the clubs behalf and they do not form part of your taxable income.

If you have received a wage or allowance from football you would have received a PAYG Summary and it would form part of your taxable income (treated exactly the same as a PAYG Summary you received from other employers). You would need to keep record of this for when you lodged your Income Tax Return.

With the new Salary Cap and player contracts in place in the 2017 season - all match payments, cash incentives and bonuses will have to be reported by your football club to the AFL and also the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). This means you will receive a PAYG Summary and the Income you receive from Football will be taxable income.

The AFL have put in place severe sanctions for both Clubs and Individual Players if Player Payment Rules are not adhered to, which range from monetary sanctions, clubs forfeiting the right to register specific players, players forfeiting the right to register for a specific club or league, relegation of clubs and loss of or ineligibility of Premiership Points for past, current or future years.

I’m only repeating what I was told on the QAFL board, when I asked about coach and player income awhile ago.

I’m not even going to pretend I know or understand anything about taxation.

Been there (quite awhile ago now).

The unofficial response from the auditor on the phone when it was completed: “I have no idea why you were flagged to be audited, you’re literally the definition of a by the book standup tax payer. Have a good afternoon”, or something like that.

Interesting from Robbo given he did sell his house a few weeks ago which is just down the road from Morningside. Something must have changed in that time for him to be going back to brisbane again. Perhaps it could have been a kids schooling thing even and being comfortable in that environment. Who knows. I do know morningside had a massive coaching cleanout at the end of last year. Not really sure on the specifics and how far it extended to players but it was significant

This sounds like something a seasoned tax dodger would say. "Yeah, I pay my tax before breakfast every day and twice on Sunday. Jim Chalmers knows my personal TFN and he drops by once a month just to check in on it. No need to look any further Auditor".

Thats probably what Al Capone said ;)
